What should you do if you have the worst record in baseball?

Give your 29-year old GM a f*cking contract extension.

As a Dallasite and a Ranger fan, this baffles me. Jon Daniels, 28-years old at the time, replaced John Hart in October of 2005 as the team's GM, and has not done shit since then. The Ranger's are home to the major leagues' worst record this year. At 26-43, the Rangers find themselves 17 1/2 games back of the Angels in the AL West weeks before the all-star break. Texas currently has a 6.13 team ERA, good enough for dead last in the American League.

Almost every trade that Daniels has marshaled has tantalized Ranger fans for the worse. His first terrible excuse for a trade was sending Alfonso Soriano to the Nationals for outfielder Brad Wilkerson, outfielder Terrmel Sledge and pitcher Armando Galarraga. Now this would go down in the record books for all-time worst trades in sports, if it wasn't for the the inclination to just get Soriano out of town. But we didn't know that Daniels would use the free-cap space to sign hurler, and hopeful ace, Kevin Millwood. Last year, Millwood's first year, he had a 12-16 record, and a 4.52 ERA. Not the kind of numbers you want from a guy you're paying $48 million dollars (four-year). Not to mention, he rebounds like the Bills in the Super Bowl. Millwood, who's really getting his money worth now, is 3-6 with a kick-me-in-the-balls 7.62 ERA. Thanks John.

Well, Daniels didn't stop pissing us off there. In December of 2005, he sent 6'10 pitcher Chris Young, who pitched his high school ball in Dallas and had a lot of potential, outfielder Terrmel Sledge, and first basemen Adrian Gonzales to San Diego for pitcher Adam Eaton, reliever Akinori Otsuka, and pitcher Billy Killian. Now, Otsuka actually helped the Rangers, filling an important reliever and closer role, and he is still presently on the team. Otsuka is 1-2 with a 2.03 ERA. He has struck out 22 batters while only giving up 9 walks. But that's about it for the trade. Chris Young went on to strike out 164 batters in 180 innings for the Padres. Young had a 3.46 ERA. Adrian Gonzales, who was anything but a throw-in, ended up batting .304 and hitting 24 home runs for San Diego. And, uhhhh.., that Adam Eaton guy? He only pitched 65 innings for Texas, and held a 5.12 ERA. He battled injuries his entire time in a Rangers uniform. And I don't even know who the fuck Billy Killian is. 'preciate it John. Not only did you give away our home-town hero, in Chris, who by the way knows how to throw a punch, we gave away a prized-bat. For what? Otsuka. There are thousands of Otsuka's out there.

It's miserable.

Oh one more. Last year, with hopes of bringing a big-bat to the heart of the Texas lineup, Daniels sent outfielder Laynce Nix, outfielder Kevin Mench (who I will always say is one of the most underrated baseball players in the league, plus he's got a ginormous head), and closer Francisco Cordero to Milwaukee for minor leaguer Nelson Cruz and big-boy Carlos Lee. Lee, who was supposed to be that big-bat, did not live up to expectations and left for Houston to roll around in $100 million. The Rangers caught a big-break in getting Houston's #17 and #35 pick in the draft. Nice, I don't know what we'd do without those. And Fransisco Cordero? He's just become Milwaukee's coveted closer, pitching his way to 26 saves, already, this year. He has 42 strikeouts in 30 1/3 innings pitched. Can't thank you enough Jon.

So why did the Rangers resign this kid? No fucking idea. ________ the Pig Pen http://hawgsports.blogspot.com

No wonder the Rangers are about 18 games out of first place with those stupid trades.

Hogpage...great job...

Wilkerson hasn't done diddly this year. Carlos Lee headed down to south Texas after a half season and Nelson Cruz has not done that great with 4 hits in last 33 times at bat and Wilkerson has no homers and one RBI in June and hitting .111 for the month with 3 hits in 27 at bats and .217 for the year hardly worth the $4.35 million they are paying him. Jon Daniels should back up to get his paycheck since he should be ashamed to even get paid much less get an extension for his shoddy GM work.

Dude welcome to the horrible baseball culb. Now that you are in, you should know that once a team is really bad, they won't try and get better for a while. It is time to rebuild. Time to build a pitching staff. Don't expect to be good for a long time. The GM and owner won't even try.

What? How? I'd like to point out that we have 2 QBs who are capable of having solid 5 game stretches... Cowboys don't know they suck, Giants are figuring it out and the Redskins know it...

But how many do you have that can stay healthy for five games?

3...

If you can tell me how a QB can avoid a broken ankle or a torn acl I'll find you a job working for the team...

I don't wanna turn this into an eagles discussion, but there are a few reasons not to worry about McNabb: He's had serious injuries before and returned to form quickly (Broken ankle, broken sternum, herniated disk...all followed up with good seasons)...Brian Westbrook and the running game will have increased participation this year, McNabb will be expected to hand off (or dump off) more and pass less...the eagles are going back to a more familiar west coast style...namely because they have acquired guys like Kevin Curtis, who is much more of a possession style receiver...

I'm not worried about the QB situation as much as I am about the WR situation. Who are they gonna throw to? Plus another factor is whether Andy Reid is going to trust Westbrook in running the ball more with McNabb at the helm. He tried it in the playoffs and Westbrook looked like one of the best RB's in the league. Will Reid learn from it, or will he kiss up to McNabb?

Hahaha...

You're aware that this team made it to multiple NFC championship games with guys named Torrence Small, Charles Johnson, Todd Pinkston and James Thrash...and the year they went to the SB, it was Greg Lewis and Pinkston...I'm not worried about receivers all that much...and its a West coast offense, its not about great receivers anways...

TO is the one that got reid to throw the ball...don't worry, a few years ago, all reid ever did was give the ball to west, staley and buck...with hunt, west and buck they'll go back...

My biggest concern is the defensive front 7...is Spikes really back, does the line, namely patterson and Bunkley have it (mostly bunkley)...Was Howard's last year a fluke? Can Kearse Recover (his ACL tear scares me more than McNabb's)...How will gocong play...How old is trotter really (knees)...What level can Gaither play it...

That's the big ? for the season

and reid, last year, stopped callinjg the offense by himself...midway through the season...you will see marty force reid to run and dink/dunk more this season, especially without a legit burner at the level of stallworth (not that he played all that often)

Good point, but I still think McNabb will need help in the recieving core with aging and injuries being a factor to his career.

One thing they have going for them is that the Cowboys failed to address their CB issues meaning the Eagles recievers can get a lot of touches.

I like the Eagles defense. It's one thing that they are consistant on. Even with Kearse out last year, they were pretty decent. Plus I think Spikes will be pumped up to be on a new team better than his last one.

Guess we'll have to see...but if the eagles receivers are the problem, don't worry, they have bigger fish to fry...

I agree with all of you on this point. The Phildaelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys improving as football teams will definitely help improve the worst record in MLB!

Ummm... There's no salary cap in baseball. GMs are just mouthpieces for their owners. A GM isn't going to make a trade without an owner's approval - you're barking at the wrong puppy. You should be barking at the Big Dog (Tom Hicks - suddenly explains alot, huh?) What you have here is a failure to see your team turning into the Orioles... at least your manager is respectable

and move the fences back to a realistic depth if you want to help your pitching staff (then YOU won't score any runs either!). That park was built with "Chicks dig the longball" as ulterior motives #1 and #1A and let's imitate the look of Camden Yards as #2... You're the Orioles!

Good topic dude, but, IMO, there's one trade that the Rangers shouldn't have done before Soriano, and that was the trade that made Soriano jump to the Rangers in the first place: the AROD trade. That was an absolutely ridiculous trade. Not only that, but he was in his prime, leading the MAJORS in homers twice. No one has ever done that as a shortstop since Ernie Banks, and those are the only players to do that. But those trades were really stupid as far as the Rangers go. For the last few years, besides the couple of years where Rangers were in third place, the Rangers are always laughed at in the AL West. Gee. I wonder why.
