What of Michigan football?

Lloyd Carr did the unthinkable in this cut-throat profession, and that's think of someone else, namely his coaching staff. Before this year, he quietly restructured his contract and got unprecedented two-year deals for his entire coaching staff. So, what of them now that Carr will be gone? Clearly they'll get paid, but with the results they've achieved, have they coached their last job?
The offense under Mike DeBord has been predictable, plotting, yet underachieving even with the leading rusher, leading passer, and All Conference tackle coming back. He of second stint with the Wolverines is clearly living on his '97 National Championship (with Michigan) reputation, because if this year is any indication, he doesn't have a clue. What was supposed to be an explosive team, by the end of the year managed a mere 91 yards in a rivalry game.
Defensively, Ron English brought a bite to a unit that lacked intensity the years before. But, when they needed to come up big (rivalry game, bowl game) they have been the goat. Against quality opponents this defense has refused to change, adapt, or make in-game adjustments, and all that has to fall on the head of the defensive coach.
It's unlikely that a coach coming in would keep the incumbent assistants, nor would he want to for the reasons outlined above. Reports have surfaced about the job being up for grabs to, not Les Miles, but Kirk Ferentz, for reasons I still cannot understand.
Say hello to my little Ferentz [mgoblog]
