What is Your Favorite Sports Moment Ever?

13
Vote

by user Dukeboy999

I have seen this question on hundreads of different countdown or top 10 shows. So let's settle it once and for all with an Armchair GM vote! Pretty self-explanatory. I will wait a couple days and see what happens.

As any self respecting Pirate fan should, I vote for Maz's World Series walk off.

if you were self-respecting, HOW could you be a Pirate fan? (had to do it)

How could you mention Maz's Homer? 1) You weren't even alive 2) it wasn't THAT much of a shock considering the Pirates won 95 games and the Yanks won 97 that year and 3) The Pirates scored 13 less runs that year while having a MUCH better pitching staff.

The only surprise was that Maz hit it and that the series went 7 games...

I would think a REAL Pirates fan enjoyed "We Are Family" WAY more, since it was a better team that FINALLY broke through after years of near misses...

Probably would have enjoyed the 70's Pirates better, but as you said I wasn't alive to take in the hold period, or any of it for that matter. Just had to do it, seeing as it was the only Pittsburgh moment near the top and I am a shameless Pittsburgh Sports supporter.

This probably won't get many votes, but my favorite sports moment of my lifetime (I feel strange voting for something I wasn't even alive to witness) was the World Series in New York in 2001 when they flew the US flag that was recovered from the fallen World Trade Center.

Umm, not to bust your bubble, but that flag wasn't from the WTC... it was from a boat docked nearby that was destroyed by the rubble and brought to the site during the recovery attempts. The owner of the boat SUED to get the flag back!

That's funny stuff A! You can continue to Remember the Maine! (The U.S.S. Maine, not John Maine) Why does everyone want to forget the Spanish-American War??

Well, if I'm going to remember the USS Maine, I may as well remember the reenactment about 60 years later in the Gulf of Tonkin.

As you said in the first of the four sentences... this has been done a billion times already... Can't you at least add a twist? Like greatest sports moments involving a handicapped person? (Jim Abbott's no-hitter?) or best mustached hero

Well if it's been on "on hundreads of different countdown or top 10 shows" then it's a darn good thing you're bringing it up! Way to shed light on unexplored topics!

I'd take their win over the Yankees over the stinker of a series vs. a Tony LaRussa led squad (big whoop, beating LaRussa when it counts). I know winning the Series is bigger in the grand scheme, but 1918 or not they'd won a World Series before. They'd never beat the Yankees in a playoff series... as we all know and repeat to Yanks fans as often as possible, NO team ever came back from a 0-3 defecit before...

Yeah, the Yankees series was beyond awesome, for sure, but I wasn't going to take the title for granted until that ball was squarely in Mientkiewicz's glove.

I must first state, I am a Mets fan. The best sports moment I've been alive for was the Red Sox winning the world series. I was drinking at a bar in downtown and was surrounded by a 93 year old guy, a father/son all decked out in sox gear and a bunch of drunk girls. When Foulke fielded that last out, the entire city went crazy. The next morning, it was dead quiet - most likely because the fans hadn't slept in 86 years.

That was a great game. Going in they called it the game of the century (silly, considering this century was only five years old at the time), but for once, the game lived up to every bit of the hype. I wouldn't call it the greatest moment in sports history, but probably the greatest moment in Texas sports history.

You could do a whole list just from the NCAA tournament... George's buzzer-beater; Tyus Edney's coast-to-coast lay-in; Bryce Drew's jumper; Michael Jordan's game-winner (followed by Fred Brown throwing the ball to J. Worthy); Scotty Thurman's 3 over Grant Hill in '94; C-Webb's timeout... The list goes on and on -- a fact, of course, that Jim Nantz and co. never fail to remind us of come tourney time (always with cheesy montages, no less).

Being only 18 years old and a huge Tiger's fan, I'd have to say this year is one of the most memorable for me. Wearing my Tiger hat with pride all these years and getting laughed at. Well, no more! If they win the World Series, I may just riot.
