What if the NFL used the BCS? Week 15 2006 results

by user False Prophet

This weekly column has become so big that even ESPN has caught on.

The BCS, for most college Football fans, is the one flaw in their great sport. Two small groups of people and a bunch of formulas determine who is the best team in the country, and who is on their way to some crappy bowl game that no one even knew existed until their team ended up in it.

What if the was an uproar in the NFL? Say the fans demanded they use the same formula as the BCS? What would happen? Let's find out.

Part 1: The Poll

I used ESPN's. They have multiple voters. They're ESPN. Fine. They're 50% of the ranking. They should be 33%, but I couldn't find another good human poll.

Part 2: The Computers

They're not all computers. They're objective measures -- make up a formula, stick in the data, out pops some rankings. Here are the six I used:

  • CPU-1: Jeff Sagarin, because he's a BCS computer. I used his "ELO CHESS"/"PURE POINTS" mesh, which he calls "RATING."
  • CPU-2: Football Outsiders, because they actually know what they're talking about.
  • CPU-3: Mike Greenberg. He isn't a Mike & Mike Mike, though.
  • CPU-4: Mr. Coffey, because he has been doing this for years, too.
  • CPU-5: Sonny Moore, because he's been doing this for years, and still uses AOL as his web host, which is weird.
  • CPU-6: Davis21wylie, ArmchairGM user and statistical dynamo.

The Rankings

Division Rankings

Average ranking of Each division rounded to the nearest one hundreth

AFC East	12.65
AFC South	13.54
AFC North	13.15
NFC East	14.04
AFC West	15.46
NFC South	19.77
NFC North	19.88
NFC West	23.52

Analysis

  • We have our first 2 undisputed rankings, with the San Diego Chargers taking all first place slots, and the Oakland Raiders taking all 31st place slots.
  • Again, the hater strikes again against the Titans, ranking them below 20 when no one else came close.
  • The AFC East regains its title as toughest Division, with 2 likely playoff contenders in the tougher conference, and 2 teams that will finnish a bit outside of the playoff picture, while the NFC East is ranked 4th. Talk about suprising.
  • The NFC West seems like a College Football Conference, with the average ranking at 23.

The Hater has a question: Why do you persist in using Football Outsiders' Weighted DVOA, which artifically makes recent games more important than earlier games? By their official, cumulative DVOA rankings, FO has Tennessee at 23rd -- just two spots higher than my own rankings.

^"artificially". I hate how you can't edit comments for spelling errors...

Quite simply ease. I know where to go exactly for their Accumulative rankings, and they turn out pretty similar to the end result now. I called you the hater because I wanted to add some creativity to that comment. I'll take a look at their weighted rankings

actually, there is another reason. I prefer having recent games weighted more because otherwise teams like the Titans and the Cowboys(to a certain extent) are likely to be ranked lower

I'm suprised you asked this, as this week and last week, I've indirectly nagged you about that problem with your rankings

Yeah, and I keep hoping that Tennessee will move up in my rankings just so I don't have to come up with an equivocation every week :)

But it does seem like Tennessee is the only team that the weighted/non-weighted problem even makes a difference for. In addition to a much-improved defense, their recent run is all predicated on Vince Young's maturation -- which is weird, because V.Y. does pretty well by my player rankings (his .379 Pts/Play is very good for a rookie QB)... so you'd think his team would do just as well. I keep coming back to that -1061 net yardage, it must be skewed by their early season. I'm glad we're having this discussion, because I agree, weighted would be better for the odds in particular. Tell you what, I'll try to come up with some weighting scheme for next week, in addition to my full-season ratings...

Thanks, it helps Tenn alot. But I would guess that DAL would also be helped a tad bit, even if it doesn't change their ranking

I am just glad that the NFL does not actually use a BCS system! :)

Why not have an ArmchairGM poll every Tuesday to rank the teams? Is that possible? Then you can add that to the ESPN poll you have... Just a thought.
