What happened in the Steelers-Falcons game?

Watching on NFL.com, I saw Morten Andersen missed a FG.

Then, Pittsburgh had the ball, and got down to within Field Goal territory with 17 seconds (but no timeouts) remaining.

Then, it says there was a false start, and a five yard penalty.

Next thing I see - the game went to overtime!

What happened in the last 25 seconds of the game?

There is nothing to suggest a Field Goal was even attempted, so why not!?

Also, Batch appears to have replaced Roethlisberger. What happened to Roethlisberger?

I think Big Ben was hit very hard and taken out.

Fair enough then! The potential tactical "error" bothers me more! The Steelers went on to lose, so it could have cost them the game.

Crazy game. Roethlisberger got hit by two Atlanta linemen and went down hard; he was taken to the locker room for examination, Batch came in and promptly threw 2 TD's, including one to tie the game in the 4th. Then Atlanta marched downfield and Koenen hit a 56-yard hame-winner... except Cowher (cheaply) called a timeout right before the snap. After the T.O., Koenen tried again and missed... but Polamalu ran into him, giving the Falcs 5 yards and another chance. This time, Andersen came in to attempt the FG, and it was on target but a few yards short. Batch completed a pass to get Pittsburgh inside FG range for Reed w/ 8 seconds left, but as they were going to spike it, Washington moved, false start, and a 10-second runoff. Overtime. Falcons won the toss, drove down the field with some nice Vick/Dunn runs, and Andersen connected on a 32-yard game-winner. Whew!

Hold on... What's this 10 second runoff? If that is what I think it is (-10 secs from the clock), why did that happen? And since when did that rule come in! I use it to my advantage all the time on Madden 2005 (usually it's offsides to stop the clock in the 2 minute drill when my opponents are on 3rd & 15 or something and running the clock out).

In the last minute of the game, if the offense has a false start, they take 10 seconds off the clock. I don't remember when it came into effect, or if it's different for defenses if they are behind. If it is, my guess is EA Sports just didn't put it in to their game, which would be weird since they have challenges, which are fairly new, in there.

Um, did you guys already forget all the controversy in last week's St. Louis/Seattle game? Seattle got flagged for an Illegal Shift rather than the False Start, which does not include the 10 second runoff, then they went and kicked for the win.

Best game in the NFL this year so far.

I wonder how many QBs have thrown for more than 200 yards in a game on less than 10 passes, only to lose...

Polamalu did not run into the kicker. More accurately, the kicker saw Polamalu laying on the ground in his general area and flopped. Terrible call by the refs.

Agreed, but it was a make-up call after the lame timeout call that negated Koenen's first made FG (the whistle blew well after the snap).

It isn't when the whistle blows, its when Cowher tells the ref he wants a timeout. Whether the whistle blows before or after the snap is irrelevant. They can blow the whistle 10 minutes after the snap and negate a play if they feel a timeout has been called before the snap. The whistle is to alert the players that a timeout has been called, and is not a marker for the fans.

Why did the Falcons have Anderson come in to kick the 51-yarder at the end? They said Anderson was only good inside the 50.

My guess is that long kicks are very hard to make that the Falcons' staff figured that Koenen made the 56 yarder that didn't count, that it was more likely that Anderson had a better chance to make it. It seems like illogical logic to me, so there has to be a better reason for it.

Because the guy nailed the first one, negated by the timeout called to ice him. And missed the second one. There is no way his heart wasn't pounding and his brain going a million miles a minute. Anderson is an experienced kicker with ice water in his veins, their other kicker didn't stand a chance of making that long kick after the miss.

Went real well for Anderson didn't it?

I think at Andersen's age "experience" isn't the right word anymore...
