What are the Stupidest Laws in Sport?

by Alex Holowczak

There are some pretty complex, or even "bad" rules in sport. I don't mean punishment for 'roiders, actual problems with rules that effect the game you play. The worst rules are those that you need to read multiple times to have any idea what it's on about. And then think of the poor buggers officiating that need to enforce these rules. I offer a few for you now.

Offside

The "Soccer" version of this is pretty complex. Rather than type it all out, rest assured, it goes on for some time. The explanation can be found here on pages 34 and 35. See if you understand that, if you don't normally watch the game. Basically, it means there must be two opposition players between you and the opponents goal when the ball is passed to you (usually 1 + goalie). But then you get permetations about hitting opposition players, what part of the body is the crucial one, it doesn't matter if you pass backwards etc.

Is this offside? See if you can tell first time, no slow mo replay, or second glances, make a decision first time.

LBW

Lbw (Leg Before Wicket) is the most awkward rule in cricket. Like Offside, it has changed over the years for various reasons. Here is the law on the Lord's website. Basically, if the ball hits you on the legs in front of the stumps, you're out. But then there are rules about whether you hit it, where the ball bounced, where the ball hit you etc. Then take into account the indefinite nature of it. The umpire is being asked to predict whether he thinks the ball will go on to hit the stumps, as well as take everything else into consideration. Nobody can ever be certain.

Is this lbw? Try and judge in real time.

Golf

Just golf generally. Such a simple game, hit a ball into a hole in the ground in as few shots as possible. But the rules are 169 pages long! Stuff about water hazards, unplayable lies, removable obstructions, sprinklers in the way... The list goes on. Then throw into the mix that the 4 Major Championships, the PGA Tour and the European Tour all use different rules! How does anyone know what's going on?

Here is an example that perfectly illustrates what I'm on about.

Scrum rules

In rugby, there is such a thing called a scrum. 8 players clash head on, and push, basically. But the referee has to make judgements about whether the front rows are pushing upwards (not head on), pushing downwards, boring in (pushing across), pushing too early, dragging the scrum down, pushing the scrum up, whether the players are binding correctly, whether flankers leave it before the ball is out etc. The referee can only ever see one side of the scrum, so at best he has to make a complete guess. The forces going on are too complex to understand, what's the difference between one player pulling it down and the other player pushing it down? It's too hard to see.

Those are the UK sports with dodgy rules, I leave you to come up with some others. Which do you think is/are the worst? Also, comment your score in the test questions for lbws and offside, just for fun. No cheating!

As a recent convert to Tighthead Prop I have to saw the new scrum laws are good. Thats why its crouch, touch, pause engage. Keeps the front row coming in straight. When they get all twisted and start ttrying to lift and drive, you can have guys destroy their necks.

The new laws were used in the Six Nations and it definitely helped. Usually each scrum had to get reset about 5 times before you got anywhere (if at all). The scrum rules used to be really dangerous, the furthest forward I ever played in one was at lock - much safer there. :)

I definitly agree. It sucked at the begining of the season here, but as the year went on people got used to it. The biggest problem with the new rule is people trying to jump the gun. However, they do make a safer game and that is a very good thing.

Tuck rule. It was used the the Pats advantage, but that rule doesn't make any sense.

The rule makes perfect sense, although it leaves loopholes. The point of the rule is so there is no doubt, or judgement calls about what constitutes the beginning of a forward pass. Once the QB's arm begins forward motion, a forward pass has begun. It can end without the ball leaving the QB's arm, but the end of the pass (or attempted pass) is clearly defined to be when the ball is tucked back in toward the QB's body. That way, the ref doesn't have to judge whether or not the attempted pass has ended or not. There's a strict definition. It does leave things like Brady's play (he was obviously not trying to throw his pass) being defined as forward passes.

The rules of golf are the same throughout the world. The official rules are written together by the USGA (who governs golf in the US and Mexico) and the Royal & Ancient (everywhere else). The only rule I can think of that is distinctly different is playoffs (sudden death for the Masters, 18 holes for the US Open, 4 holes for British Open, 3? for the PGA).

No, some are different. An example happened in the Open Champion Championship. Under European Tour rules, Paul McGinley couldn't have had relief from a sprinkler head, rather than putt over it. But under Open Championship rules he could have had it moved. When they questioned him about it afterwards, he said he didn't know the rules, and that they had three sets of rules depending on what tour they played.

That's an issue with the Open and the Euro Tour. I have not seen anything like that on the PGA TOUR.

Someone bust out the English Dictionary pic! These are RULES not LAWS, Alex!

Feetball should eliminate offsides altogether - it would make the game faster, more open and increase scoring through cherry picking! Offsides is neccessary in other sports like hockey because the playing area is smaller. If a guy wants to cherry pick in Feetball, the team will suffer defensively, but that's the chance you take...

American Football is a game of stupid rules.

No, some have rules, some have laws. Cricket has laws, football has laws... I don't know about the others. Also, chess uses 2 clocks, does that make it even stupider? :)

On a called or swinging 3rd strike, if the catcher drops the ball, or does not catch the ball, and 1st base is unoccupied, the runner can attempt to reach 1st base. I never understood why this was, or what purpose it served.

I agree, that happened on by MLB game, confused me entirely... They should just have a dropped strike (on any pitch) count as a ball.

Worst rule in baseball: When running to first base, the batter technically has to run in fair territory for the first 45 feet, then in foul territory for the last 45 feet, and he can come back into fair territory to touch the base. I've actually seen a kid called out for not doing this (b/c he was in the catcher's way or something). By the way, I used to be against the DH...but do you really want to spend your money/time watching a pitcher (not named Carlos Zambrano) get in the batter's box? It's a complete mismatch...and it's really not all that interesting at all.

That's true - why can't a runner slide into first base? Or has nobody ever thought of it?

Sliding into first base does not help. It slows you down. The reason people don't do it is because you can run as fast as you can and get in foul territory afterwards where you cant be tagged out.
