What a stupid statement.

I was browsing a football forum on MySpace (Leave me alone...) and came across an over/under -rated players list. Thinking I could possibly read something funny, I saw something posted a few times at the OVERRATED TE position

TE Jeremy Shockey. Now, I'm a Philadelphia Eagles fan through and through, but I WILL NOT deny this mans many abilities. How can you call this man overrated? He's the most complete TE in the NFL, running, catching, blocking, yards after the catch ("YAC") and he fires his team up. The guy is playing with a bad ankle held by metal screws. His career could end at anytime, but he plays his heart out.

Now, I hear about "Well Antonio Gates is better" or "Alge Crumpler owns him". No, just now. Those 2 are RECEIVING TEs, nothing more. Notice how each of those 2 teams they play for, incorporate a blocking style TE on the other side. Because Gates and Crumpler cannot block! The onyl other TE in this league that complete is Tony GOnzalez. No one else.

I put Shockey as the #2 TE in the league. Behind Gonzalez, which won't last long because Tony is getting old whereas Shockey is in his prime. To call Shockey overrated is just plain stupid. You want overrated? See: Dallas Clark and Antonio Gates

I believe your statement is completely true, I am a Giants fan so my oppinion is definately biased but Shockey is a complete TE he catches runs and blocks. He also epitomizes what the NFL should be with his tough play and hardnosed attitude. He is the heart of The Giants team and dominates when the coaches get him involved. And dont even try talking up Antonio Gates he is not a complete tight end just a wr that has TE size

Shockey may be the most physically gifted TE but he is a lot of hype. Anyone can fire up a team. There have been countless teams that have a bench player who fires the team up. Sorry it takes more than a firey mouth and temper to be the best.

A fiery mouth? How about the fact that he does everything and mroe than a TE is asked. Like I stated, the only TE who claim his completion as a TE is Gonzalez. No one else. Fiery mouth you act as if Shockey does ntohing more then run his mouth. Watch him play, watch how much extra he has to do. With how poor that O-Line played, Shockey was forced to block, removing Manning's #2 target and a player that defenses have to plan around along with then RB Barber. He's not all Hype.

oh, and he was a top 5 TE in receptions, so it's not like he never got the ball

Jeremy Schockey is complete NY hype. He is a good tight end but hardly a great one.

Shockey is too injury prone to be the second best TE in the NFL. But for the injury issue, I would cocnur with your assessment.

Injury prone? Bullshit me more? He had 1 season where he missed more than 1 game, that was his 2nd year where he played in only 9. Which was also his worst year (harldy bad though, 535 yards 2 td in 9 games? not bad) So he's played 69 out of a possible 80 games.Which is hardly "injury prone". Also, like I said, his ankle is being held together by screws. Make sure you research before you post something as fact guys : )

Those screws would be better served keeping Schockey's mouth wired shut.

69 out of a possible 80 games. yeah, how many of those 69 games was he at 100%...don't think too many..half the time he's playing with a sprained ankle..while i admire his ability to play hurt, there was ALWAYS something wrong

Shockey keeps injuring his ankles trying to get away from gay people. Just ask Howard Stern for further details.

actually zero games since that second year have been at 100 percent, nor will their ever be another one at 100% since his ankle is practically shot. But even on a permanantley bad ankle he will is better than most tes in the league

You have screws in your ankle and try to be 100%. Mos tof you won't play a game with a pulled hammy. Want some proof how good he is, even when he isnt 100%

Over the past 3 years since missing 7 games in his 2nd year.

he averaged 726 yards, 6 TDs, 11.3 yard avg.

Yea for hardly being healthy, he sure puts up good numbers

He's still a bit over-rated. He came into the league with huge hype, quickly signed advertising deals, and while he can play with some heart--on a heartless Giants team--he hasn't fulfilled expectations.

wasn't he the highest drafted TE at the time? (or close to it) TE's aren't THAT hard to find... Blame it on "the U" experience.... they make good players cockier than great ones... Thank you, Michael Irvin...

What expectations? He's their best TE since Mark bavaro. He's done his job and then some. He puts up numbers every year despite being forced to block mroe than any elite TE in the game. I think he deserves that #2 title.

again, as a three time Michael Vick fantasy owner/glutton for punishment, I must remind you that ATL has routinely had the leading rushing yardage and attempts per season than any team since Shockey entered the league...

and Alge Crumpler has done better # - wise...

Get over the NY focus... Jeremy Shockey is any given so-so to decent TE with a better sound bite and better tattoos.

I agree that he's the best since Mark Bavaro, but he was supposed to be the *best* in the league. If not for a generation.

well being second best isnt bad considering what he has gone through. Also he will be the best if the coaching staff correctly utilizes him and Tony G is continued to have an increased role as a blocker as opposed to a receiving threat.

Alge Crumpler plays in a running style offense... Check ATL's running vs. passing #'s. I don't even really care and I know this much - ATL is WHAT # in rushing? Oh yeah, that's right... LaDanian never runs.... TE's DO play a part in team's running schemes... BASH all you wanmt, but check ALL your numbers/facts FIRST before popping off reclessly please... This doesn't mean I disagree with you... TE's production rely directly on coach's preferences and QB's reliances... but #'s don't tell the WHOLE story...

Lmfao Male..or whatever his name is, is SD's blocking TE, Gates is the #1 receiver on that whole offense. And Crumpler hardly blocks and Dunn hardly runs to his side. He runs to Blakely's side. plus the fact that they had justin Griffith, and an amazing O-Line. I checked my facts and numbers. ATL is #1 rushing for this reason. Vick's Rushing 1039. Dunn had 1140. Take away Vick's yards and you have a middle of the pack Rushing team. Numbers tell most of the story, also, I se ethe Giants play since a friend of mine is a die hard Giants fan, so i watch them often and see many highlights. Shockey does more than any TE in the NFL and is by far #2. nothing will disprove that.

and the TE/OT on the weakside actually matter a lot more than the strong side. The lead blocker can help out on the strong side, and the RB can see the defenders. The Weak side has to keep the defenders from blindsiding the RB. So actually, I'd say that works in Crumplers favor

Just b/c he can block doesn't make him that great. I'd guess most decent starting TE's could do what he does for the Giants.

And, on top of everything else, most teams use a 2 TE system if their successful. The pats do, the Colts do, the Chargers do, I think the Broncos do, and I'd guess the bears do. So lets see, the 2 SB teams, the team of the decade, and one of the most consistantly successful teams in the league run a 2 TE system. The Giants, according to you, don't really do that. They flirt with being a playoff team. Not exactly success, IMO

Im a steelers fan, so I hate to say that Todd Heap also belongs up there with Shockey, Gonzalez, and Gates. And I hope one day that I can say that Heath Miller does too.
