What a difference a few Errors make

Kelvim Escobar is off to a sad start. He has a 5-7 record, but is posting a 3.62 ERA. He is listed as having the best ERA among pitchers with losing records, even though he's recieved 41 runs of support in his 13 games. Right now, he is riding a 5 game losing streak after getting a no-decision Wednesday. The difference between his performance and his record can be broken down to the 14 unearned runs given up by the Angels during his starts. In just his last 4 games, his supporting cast has committed 6 errors. Those errors are the difference between being outscored 20-12 or scoring more than your opponents 12-11. His ERA during that time is 3.66 and he has clearly pitched well enough to get at least one victory during that time. It just goes to show that while strike outs, home runs, OBA and WHIP are among the glorified statistics in baseball, the lowly error can make a huge difference.
