What Makes Golf Great

While many were out on the 4 th of July attending barbeques, and setting off fireworks, I took a slightly different approach. Being the sports fan that I am, I took some time out of my day to attend the first annual AT&T National Golf Tournament hosted by Tiger Woods. Now like many people I am a casual golf fan at best, so this was the first time I’ve been in attendance at a PGA event. After spending one day out on the course, I have to admit, I could not have had a better time and cannot wait to go back and watch the players in action this weekend.

If you are a sports fan, attending a golf tournament is something you need to experience. Any venue that hosts a PGA event is going to be immaculate, and a beautiful place to spend a day. Golf tournaments also provide an up close and personal view of your favorite athletes that no other sport provides. While at the AT&T National, I had the opportunity to meet and greet several of the world’s top players including Adam Scott, Jim Furyk and Tiger Woods himself. True these encounters were nothing more than a handshake and a quick autograph but as a fan it does not take much to bring the kid out in me.

My point is I challenge you to go to any other event and have that much all around access to your favorite athletes. I was able to watch the guys warm up on the driving range, and then talk with them as they crossed the cart path on their way to the tee box on the first hole. Having the opportunity to watch Tiger this closely, is like passing Michael Jordan balls during his pre-game shoot around. Anyone who has the chance should take advantage of it. Attending a PGA event is definitely a memory I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

You have to be at the right place at the right time. Yesterday was the Pro-Am so it was a slow day and more relaxed.

Gold may be the only sport where you can see the star athlete play the sport with a current or former President of the United States. You can't say that about any other sport!

Very true, I actually missed that yesterday. When Bush played 16-18 with Tiger. I did see him take a tee shot off the first hole though. Pulled it right into the rough bout 168 yrds off the tee

I'm actually somewhat of a fun of golf- I like to swing around the club- business is done of the golf course- being black though most of my buddies don't play.

Anyway, I have never BEEN to a live event but I honestly can't think of any other sport where you can get that close to the players- like if you get knocked in the head by a ball while standing in the rough you are right there- So is it really that fun?? It can't compare to a baseball or football game does it?

PS- this is BigPimpin(Up)- a guy I work with went to a skins match- he said there was smokin chicks all over- kind of groupies if you would say- is that true?

Its a very relaxing day. I mean youre outside at a beautiful venue on typically a nice day. There are gorgeous women walking around and hanging out. Everything is very relaxed and calm. And you can go at your own pace. If you want to laydown under a tree take a nap for a while, you can do that.

Right, I go to the pro am here in Phoenix every year for the FBR Open and have no problem with approaching players. I'm not an autograph hound by any means but if the opportunity presents itself I'll take it. A few years ago my buddies and I walked about five holes with Mark Rypien, he was there as a fan, just hanging out. He bought a round of brews for everyone, and we bought for him too. Really, really nice guy. I've also worked as a course marshall a couple times, got to meet Lanny Wadkins, Nick Faldo, and a few others. Really haven't met a bad guy. Except Steve Williams, Tiger's caddie. Woods himself is OK, considering how famous he is he has no trouble posing for pictures and what not, but Williams is a prick.
