The season that ended without a World Series being played prompts many questions. Several players were on pace to make history, and many did incredible things in a short period of time. After studying the numbers, a few questions popped up...
- Would Tony Gwynn have hit .400? He finished at .394 and was hot right before the strike.
- Would anyone have hit 62 home runs? There were six players with more than 35, including Matt Williams at 43.
- How many complete games would Greg Maddux have finished with? He had 10 CG, and still had at least eight starts left.
- Would Jeff Bagwell have challenged the Babe's total base record? Bags had 300 TB in 110 games, and was near the pace to match Ruth's 457 bases.
- Would Bagwell have won the Triple Crown? It would have been hard with Gwynn around, but he was leading the league in RBI and was second in HR and batting average.
- Who would have won the World Series? The Expos had the best record, but the pitching of the Yankees or White Sox would have prevailed.
- Who would have won the AL West? The Rangers were winning with a 52-62 record, and the winner would have most likely finished below .500.
