What If? 1994 MLB

15
Vote

The season that ended without a World Series being played prompts many questions. Several players were on pace to make history, and many did incredible things in a short period of time. After studying the numbers, a few questions popped up...

  1. Would Tony Gwynn have hit .400? He finished at .394 and was hot right before the strike.
  2. Would anyone have hit 62 home runs? There were six players with more than 35, including Matt Williams at 43.
  3. How many complete games would Greg Maddux have finished with? He had 10 CG, and still had at least eight starts left.
  4. Would Jeff Bagwell have challenged the Babe's total base record? Bags had 300 TB in 110 games, and was near the pace to match Ruth's 457 bases.
  5. Would Bagwell have won the Triple Crown? It would have been hard with Gwynn around, but he was leading the league in RBI and was second in HR and batting average.
  6. Who would have won the World Series? The Expos had the best record, but the pitching of the Yankees or White Sox would have prevailed.
  7. Who would have won the AL West? The Rangers were winning with a 52-62 record, and the winner would have most likely finished below .500.

12 years later and the questions are still popping up! To answer number four, I'd say yes, but only if Bagwell stayed injury-free. In how many games did Babe Ruth amass those 457 TB? If it was less than 162 and, Bagwell did indeed surpass 457 TB, then the record wouldn't have been as highly revered.

Would Montreal have won the NL East, ending Atlanta's run at only three straight division crowns. Montreal was leading by six games when the season was called.

Montreal was leading by six games with more than a month and a half to play. Atlanta was leading the league in homeruns for the third season in a row, and they were second in the league in team ERA. Montreal had a heck of a team that year, but the division title was anything but iced. That would have been a really fun September.

Montreal would not only have won the NL East, but they would have won the World Series. This victory would save baseball in Montreal!

There's a website that sorted everything out via simulation, and it said that the Expos would indeed have won the Series. In fact, they would have beaten the Yanks in 7 games! Talk about impressive! Website located at www.whatifsports.com

Simulations also had Texas losing the Rose Bowl. Simulations had UT's basketball team going to the NCAA championship game. I don't put much stock in simulations.

I agree wholeheartedly. I enjoy seeing things like that, too. They are fun. What I have a problem with is statements like "they would have defeated the Yankees in 7 games."

The Marlins didn't win the World Series. Jose Mesa lost it.

Would Ken Griffey Jr. have hit 60? Thats a much better story for the country, he was at 40 in 111 games I believe.

If I recall correctly, Jeff Bagwell was injured right before the strike. He was done for the season.
