What I've learnt so far about college football

As an Australian, I have little understanding of how college football works but I'm learning, slowly. So far this is what I've learnt:

1. Division IA is the top division of college football and is the division of most importance and is often synonymous with college football itself.

2. The top division currently does not contain a playoff system, whereas lower divisions do.

3. Only the top 2 teams compete in a one-game playoff to determine the National Champion.

4. Rankings are done by polls which are conducted by computers and media and not done by regular season won-loss record like in the NFL.

5. There have been calls to have a playoff format in the top division.

6. The top division consists of 12 conferences with an uneven number of teams. 6 of these conferences are considered major conferences and are granted entry into a Bowl game. The 6 others are considered minor conferences and have smaller importance compared to the other 6.

7. There are different rules in college football than in professional football.

8. College football players who are successful can go on to professional football by getting drafted in the NFL.

9. College football is overrated.

Sugar Bowl, Rose Bowl, Orange Bowl, and Fiesta Bowl are part of the "Bowl Championship Series" (BCS). From 1999 until last year, they would rotate the national championship between them (the order was Fiesta, Sugar, Orange, Rose). However, this coming year will include a specific National Championship game in the BCS. As you said, the site of the national championship game will be one of the venues for the above bowls (Phoenix, New Orleans, Miami and Pasadena respectively). This game will be in addition to the Bowl game, not replacing it. So in Phoenix this year there will be both the Fiesta Bowl and the National Championship game. Make sense?

yes it makes sense. I actually just read about it how for the first time they'll have a separate Bowl game to decide the National Champion.

Yeah, its a confusing system, and should be done away with. But thats the way it is and the way it will be.
