As an Australian, I have little understanding of how college football works but I'm learning, slowly. So far this is what I've learnt:
1. Division IA is the top division of college football and is the division of most importance and is often synonymous with college football itself.
2. The top division currently does not contain a playoff system, whereas lower divisions do.
3. Only the top 2 teams compete in a one-game playoff to determine the National Champion.
4. Rankings are done by polls which are conducted by computers and media and not done by regular season won-loss record like in the NFL.
5. There have been calls to have a playoff format in the top division.
6. The top division consists of 12 conferences with an uneven number of teams. 6 of these conferences are considered major conferences and are granted entry into a Bowl game. The 6 others are considered minor conferences and have smaller importance compared to the other 6.
7. There are different rules in college football than in professional football.
8. College football players who are successful can go on to professional football by getting drafted in the NFL.
9. College football is overrated.
