What Has the Postseason Schedule done to Major League Baseball?

This year Major League Baseball is instituting a new playoff format. One that could severly alter the World Series winner. With teams getting multiple days off, the best team may not win. Even though they did not always in the past, it was closer than this could be. With the numerous off days in the postseason, the #4 and #5 starter do not even have to pitch.

The #3 starter may not have to pitch much at all either. So teams that have horrid back ends of the rotation, but have good #1 and #2 pitchers now have higher chances fo succeeding. Teams like the Padres who can have Peavy and Young pitch 15 times in the entire postseason and only be on four days rest a handful of times. This is ridiculous. This especially comes into play with relievers who can pitch back-to-back days and get a day off, then do it again. Teams only need 2 or 3 good relievers, maybe 4.

The Boston Red Sox who have a better bullpen than anybody in baseball now can only put out so many of their great relievers. Plus, you need to mix in the #4 and #5 starter every once in a while. To think this is all being done, because FOX and TBS want playoff games on the weekends as much as possible. As they did not start the games late enough to begin with. I understand that this is how it is and we have to live with it, but there are too many off days in this postseason. Think about the team that sweeps in the NLCS and has to wait 8 days to play their next game. Just a little bit of rust to knock off.

I agree about taking too many days off between games, that is exactly how I felt about the last NBA playoffs.

The NBA playoffs are just stupid. Is it me, or does the 1st round of the NBA playoffs now last three weeks?

Now, is your complaint really about the schedule, or is it more rooted in the fact of this:

"The Red Sox who have a better bullpen than anybody in baseball now can only put out so many of their great relievers."

Let's at least be honest about the main reason for the griping. It affects everyone the same.

Well I'm concerned for my Mets as well, who have a very good back half of their rotation, but at the same time, I understand the author's conern for everyone around. It is a legitimate argument that a team like the Padres could just go on Peavy and Young alone and conceivably win a title that way. I don't want to say that a team should have something taken away from them for having two great starters, I just think they should have left it like it was.

I doubt that you will see a team throw a two man rotation for a seven game set. It just is not feasible. Besides, even in San Diego, they have a solid third starter, a guy named...Maddux I believe. Besides, guys usually pitch every fifth day now...so Peavy and Young throwing "15 times in the entire postseason" is completely overblown.

Will be interested to see how this effects my Mets...especially with Pedro coming back into the fold. But all sports are all about TV revenues these days it seems.

The 4-man playoff rotation is a relatively recent thing. It used to be SOP for teams to go to a 3-man playoff rotation, with the ace pitching 1, 4 and 7. This is hardly cause for panic and alarm, unless of course one is Red Sox fan, where even the slightest potential slight is cause for much public handwringing and paranoia.

Exactly. The 1987 Twins are the poster child, winning the Series with only two quality starters. Frank Viola started games 1,4, and 7 with Bert Blyleven hurling in games 2 and 5. There are plenty of other examples of this phenomenon.

Exacty, what this does is weaken the pitching, thus allowing the lesser of the two teams a better chance to make the Series. The good teams know their three best are usually better than the other teams, this throws another option into the equation which in my opinion have the impact to change the outcome which is wrong. As usual, money is more important than the product on the field.

How is this a problem? The 9 guys on the field will play the ballgames. It doesn't matter squat if your 25th guy is better than the other team's 25th guy. Any team with two great starters is lucky. Any team with three great starters is lucky as hell. If my two starters are better than the three starters you throw at me, and better than your hitters, then I deserve to win. If St. Louis winning the WS last year proves anything, it's that the best team doesn't always win.

And if the Padres, for example, win the World Series, Jake Peavy and Chris Young won't win all the games. They won't even start over 1/2 of their games.

Think of it this way: if we... no, the RED SOX (I remember, Manny) make the playoffs, we won't have to see Eric Gagne pitch.

Tavarez actually pitched pretty well before the summer started, compared to what I thought. He has his good days and his bad days. When he is bad, he is GOD AWFUL though.

And I don't think that a two man rotation can really help them win it all. It might help them win the ALDS, since it is only a best of 5 series (which means you have to win 3), but that's all. Who would win, Chris Young and Jake Peavy or Carlos Zambrano, Rich Hill, Ted Lilly, etc.? First off, Peavy and Young aren't miracle men where as soon as they're on the mound, it's an automatic win. If the Padres get 3-4 runs when they pitch in a five man rotation, they're fine, but if they pitch in a 2-3 man rotation, they're not going to be as efficient. They have 1 day off. So? Plus, they're facing the toughest teams in their respective leagues.

especially when you factor in that Young has struggled the past five weeks or so and had a stint on the disabled list. The Padres lineup is not a major offensive threat, as evidenced by their run total to date (634 runs, 4th worst in the NL, and only 1 in front of Arizona.)

Exactly. The last time Chris Young won a ballgame was on July 19th. That's really saying something. He can't do wonders for the Padres, like I said, and him being on the disabled list really made him lose what he had before the all star break. He's also lost 4 of his last 4 decisions. Also, in August, he had an ERA of 5.38, and in September so far, he has an ERA of 8.00. Compare that to July's 0.41, and June's 1.52, and May's 1.12. He was a key factor as to why the Padres were doing so well without a decent offence. And you wonder why the Diamondbacks still have a pretty good lead in the NL West. He just hasn't been himself for the past couple of months.

Look at it from the DBacks side. They're something like 12 wins above their pythogorean (?) record, which means they've overachieved big time. If I'm the Mets or Phillies or whoever I'm not scared one bit to play them. Brandon Webb is good, but he's been struggling. Livan Hernandez? Doug Davis? Micah Owings? Are you kidding? Same with the Brewers. How the heck are they still in contention. Sheets has been hurt. Capuano hasn't won since before the All-Star break. If the two teams in the World Series will be the two teams with the best pitching, then the Red Sox will play San Diego. If you're betting on the two BEST teams, then it will be Boston and the Mets. But the route their will be longer because the series will all go longer.

I'm not that concerned about the competitive balance issue as much as the lengthening of the season. While a couple commenters correctly ridiculed the NBA for how long their playoff take, it is a bigger issue in baseball. All NBA games are indoors. Playing baseball in Boston, Chicago or Cleveland in November is just asking for trouble.

Playing outdoor baseball in Cleveland in April is asking for trouble. Ask anyone in Cleveland, Seattle, Anaheim or Milwaukee.
