What About Williams?

Everyone is talking about who the Raptors will take in the upcoming NBA Draft, whether there will be a logjam at the center position, all the while neglecting mentioning the possibility of signing former Chicago Bulls PG Jay Williams.

Current Raptors PG Mike James has endured countless claims suggesting that he is a ball hog. If 5.8 APG isn’t indicative of his lack of teamwork, I don't know what is. By the way, those 5.8 APG are tied for 18th among all PG.

Currently, Chris Bosh is playing admirably at Power Forward, and with Charlie Villanueva at Forward, Morris Peterson at Shooting Guard, the team needs a legit center and a point guard who can share the ball.

With the recent acquisition of center Rasho Nesterovic, I feel the Raptors should trade him and Mike James for a high draft pick. If such a deal falls through, the Raptors can take Bargnani without hesitation, knowing they have their acquired draft pick to fall back on. Then, if they sign Jay Williams, they will be set with young talent for quite some time.

Why would anybody trade their 'high' choice for Nesterovic and James, both decent but largely journeyman players? Obviously, there's the salary cap implication as well, but usually most teams can match their overpaid underachievers for yours.

Teams will do a lot for a 20 ppg point guard. His improvement over the past year makes him much more attractive to teams in need of such a guard. He has improved with each successive year during his five year career.
