WhatIfSports Removes MLB Player Names

16
Vote

WhatIfSports.com, an online sports simulation game that allows you to build anachronistic teams and face them off against those of others, has removed MLBPA player names from their database. As per the site, "active player union members and alumni union members, have had their player names adjusted." This change affects about 25% of their seasons.

WIS cites their inability to license the names from Major League Baseball Advanced Media ("MLBAM"). Last year, the MLBPA (Major League Baseball Players Association) sold exclusive licensing rights to players names to MLBAM. MLBAM has been unwilling to sell licenses at the same prices as MLBPA did in prior seasons. This has lead to litigation, with one fantasy games company filing suit (PDF file) against MLBAM, asking for a declaration that their use of names without a license does not violate the rights of MLBAM.

Utterly insane. MLB should be ashamed; these kind of sites only help themselves and their players. Can't they see that through the fog in their money-grubbing brains?

No, they can't see that, Xinoph. The old guard needs to be removed and replaced. They have no idea how much fantasy sports can help them. Why would they try to take them down? Unreal. http://thesportsfan.tv/

If WIS submitted to MLB , they would have to raise their prices by $10 a team.MLB shows again that they are not about baseball but about $$

A lawsuit is supposed to take place in Missouri this July involving use of stats by fantasy leagues (vs. MLB AM). The result will be no free fantasy leagues, MLB will control all fantasy leagues, all stats, all likenesses, & a lot of money. This is all sold to you under the guise of parity, equality & fairness. As usual in such cases, you will pay & someone else will get richer.

It is again time to look at Baseball's monopoly and time to get rid of it.

it's useless without recent player names. I can't be expected to know the number of every player to ever play the game

I don't really know why I'm surprised; any organization that would appoint Bud Selig as its head can be trusted to display utter incompetence at every turn.

did they license the names to any other sport sim websites? My experience with WIS (WhatIfSports.com) was not good due to their horrible customer service so I don't see this as any loss.
