What’s it Worth?
Every year the day after the Super Bowl we as football fans go into depression for about five months until camps start popping up all over the country in mid-July. For this is the time that we can put down our prozac and trade it in for all the beer that we want and drink with “The Twins” (although I prefer Michelob Ultra….Gotta watch that figure). Yes indeed, “Here’s to football”. Of course I’m referring to regular season football that is…Not the glorified practices in 70,000 seat stadiums tabbed as “Preseason Games”.
Okay, so practice makes perfect and everybody needs to practice. Fans attend these games because the teams along with the league offer discount prices…Gee thanks. I don’t have to pay $65 to watch a QB from Roadrunner College play the entire 2nd half…For that it will only cost me $25. For some this is the only way they can attend a game in person in the preseason at discount rates. Some feel they’re not getting their moneys worth by only seeing players they recognize for a series or two…But really, what do you want? Teams must protect their investments, besides does Clinton Portis really need to prove what kind of back he is on a steamy, summer night in August. I guess he does…Opps, that sound you hear is Redskins fans gasping for air. Now he must be applauded for his efforts as he ran his ass off to try to make the tackle, but now that tackle could play a significant role in what kind of year the Gibb’s bunch has. Wonder who wants to kill themselves more on this day, Gibbs, Redskins Fans, of Fantasy owners of C.P.?
In the same game, yeah we saw Carson Palmer & Chad Johnson, although one was in street clothes & the other was showing off what happens to your head when one gets to close to a lawnmower. If you’re going to play one or two series why even bother…What’s Chad going to do, catch one ball for eight yards? The preseason is geared towards the players who are currently on the team that don’t get time, or that QB from Waffle House State trying to make a good impression & a name for himself. I think we all know big names in the NFL, or veterans who play on either side of the ball know what the hell they’re doing…It’s old hat.
Now I agree it’s important to get the continuity down before going into September, but these games can’t be that important. By the time one gets on this level he better damn well know how to play football…Either you have it or you don’t. For those players who the verdict is still out on, shouldn’t they be receiving more of a look especially in the first couple games? This past weekend there was no Drew Bledsoe on the field in Seattle…How many years has he been chucking the flying pigskin around? Let’s face it, we be hard to find another Trent Green-Kurt Warner story in St. Louis. Reason being, there’s no more Iowa Barnstormers. Now I understand there’s different circumstances surrounding every team, but is it really worth the risk? I mean, what’s the reward here? Possibly ending a season before the regular season ever kicks off…Awesome! Although the sidelines can be one scary place too…One never knows when he is going to get T-Boned by T-Rex on a runaway golf cart. All I can say to that he can kiss his being crowned “Capital One Mascot of the Year” chances goodbye. In addition the Redskins might be forced to kiss their season goodbye depending on CP’s wing…I don’t have a Playar Hater Degree, but I do know shoulder injuries can linger. Boy, just another reason not to be in Washington…And Bush thought he had it bad, go figure.
