What's the point of the Two Minute Warning?

8
Vote

by user Alex Holowczak

I have long wondered about the two minute warning.

How did it come into being? And why was it brought in?

It appears to be an unnecessary break in the game, and I would like to know information about it.

Hope you can help!

It's articles like this that beg for a "Create a Discussion," button. I'm not criticizing, I've been in the same boat many times.

I don't know for sure about the two minute warning my I'm guessing it has several reasons for existing

  • To create drama - Oh! There's only two minutes left! Oh no!
  • To add some "stategery" - It's like an extra time out
  • To give announcers the excuse to use the phrase "Two-Minute Drill"
  • The most likely reason, though, is so there's yet another excuse to go to commercial. It's all about the Benjamins, baby.

I personally have always found it dumb in both the NFL and NBA how teams hold the last two to five minutes as sacred strategy time. If they cared as much about being nit-picky the entire game instead of just the very last part of it, they'd be a lot better team. However I guess it's a lot easier to see how the game goes by just sitting back and letting things unfold and seeing if you need to put in any extra effort into the last few minutes. Plus it makes for good TV. (unless it's the NBA playoffs and the games aren't over until 1 am)

The clock rules are different for the final two minutes of an NFL game. The two minute warning serves as notice that these different rules are officially "in effect". The new rules include that the clock start when the ball is touched by a recieving player on a kickoff and not when the ball is kicked, when a player is injured the team must call a timeout, and of course, coaches may not challenge a play in the final two minutes.

All rules that apply to my "why not make the whole game as important" theory

score 3 more touchdowns earlier in the game and the last 2 minutes won't matter!

That sucks how coaches aren't allowed to challenge in the last 2 minutes...

Because all games that require the use of clocks are stupid. Baseball is KING!!! (Go Suns)

In the CFL, it is a three-minute warning.

I could give you a whole physics reason why there will never ever be time machines... To do with energy and time and such. I shalln't bore you unless someone asks...

Right, but what about someone living in a parallel universe with different physics that allow for time travel?

If a Universe was parallel, it would have the same physics... surely?

Thankyou for your help, everybody. The answer seems to be to change the clock rules, but quite why they need to change is a different question altogether.

Most of the game is on Autopilot for coaches, they try and let the QB handle the problems, but in final two minnutes, your can lead a long drive into a touchdown through the air. The players are tired, and most of them will overthink during this period, allowing more agressive play calls. And finaly, although it works on Madden, the Two minnute drill Scheme is Not effective for 60 minnutes. It works twice a game for two minnutes, if that.

You mean "most of the game is on autopilot for *bad* coaches." I guarantee Belichick never leaves anything on autopilot, for example.

Why do the time rules need to be different in the final 2 minutes of each half?

Actually I changed my mind on the whole issue. I think it's great how their different timing rules in the final 2 minutes of each half although not sure why the NFL can't just copy college football where the ref does notify that there's 2 minutes left in the half but they don't actually have a time out for it.
