What's Your Fantasy? -- Part I

August is nearly upon us, which means training camp and pre-season football is close. It is time for you to get ready for the fantasy football season and what better way to do that than to decide which service you are going to use. Are you going to pay to play or go with a freebie? Do you prefer a “total points” league, or head-to-head? Let’s take a look at some of the top fantasy football providers and see which one is best for you!
ESPN Fantasy Football
With ESPN Fantasy Football, you have the option of playing for free or playing for prizes. The free version is highly customizable, meaning that you can create your own league complete with custom rules and scoring. If you aren’t ready for the responsibility and extra time that comes with creating a league, you can join one that best fits your needs. One perk of using ESPN for your fantasy football league is that you get free advice from ESPN’s Fantasy Team including season and weekly projections of player performance. You can also keep track of your team’s performance through what ESPN calls “Fantasy Cast”, a real-time scoring feature.
Those wishing to play for prizes will have to pay to register a team. The one-team fee is $29.95, while the three and five team packages are $49.95 and $69.95, respectively. ESPN calls these leagues “premium”. So, what are the prizes for the eligible premium leagues? The team that has the highest full season overall adjusted score in premium standard fantasy football leagues AND wins his/her league championship at the end of the playoffs will be the grand prize winner. The grand prize includes an ESPN VIP trip for two to Hawaii the weekend of February 10, 2008. I’m assuming this trip coincides with the Pro Bowl. More information about other league prizes up for grabs can be found here under section #10.
I personally have used Yahoo! for all of my fantasy sports needs, but this year I am seriously considering ESPN because of the availability of real-time statistics and scoring as well as the gobs of analysis, advice, and stats.
Please note: Registration is required for both free and premium services.
