What's Wrong With Eli?

what's wrong with eli?
what's wrong with eli?

In his third season, New York Giants QB Eli Manning has not lived up to expectations. Although Eli's passing rating has improved from 2005 to 2006, from 75.9 to 77.5, it does not seem as if the former 1st round, first pick is making the jump to NFL super-stardom. Over the past four games, he has only managed to throw for roughly 500 yards with 2TDs and 4 picks, while the Giants have strung together two disappointing losses.

Here are the questions I pose to you, ArmchairGM nation: Is Eli horribly overrated? Does Eli need another year of seasoning, before he can dominate the league? Are the Giants in trouble, if Eli doesn't develop into the super-star he was billed as?

Great pic. Maybe he's drinking before the games.

Nah. He is not a drunk. Just a guy who used his last name to get where he is at. He is not a good QB. If he was named anything but Manning, he would have been a mid-draft selection. He is what he is.

I think Eli is a bit overrated (mainly because of his name and pedigree). Mix in the pressure of being a first round pick, playing in New York, and trying to live up to comparisons and it's not stretch to see it. But he is talented as hell. Maybe if the expectations were lowered a tad and he was able to develop at a more normal pace, it would be a different story. In the long run, he'll be fine. BTW - Peyton wasn't great in his first couple of years either.

That's true about Peyton, but he also had fewer weapons around him than Eli did. Peyton went into a true number-one draft-pick team that needed a year or two to acquire some weapons to help him progress (see Edgerrin James). But Eli went into a situation with a team that TRADED for him, and he's had the benefit of playing with offensive weapons like Toomer, Burress, Barber and Shockey. Eli isn't hurting for support the way Manning was his first few years.

But I've never understood the hype around Eli. All throughout college, they maintained that he looked better than Peyton, even though he never played as well. He had accuracy issues in college, and I felt he never played to the level Peyton did in college. So, I don't know why we'd be surprised that he's not at that level right now. It's still early, and he's suffering from some unfair expectations because of his older brother. But, frankly, I've felt all along that he was overrated. And only time will truly tell which team got the better deal, but with San Diego getting Rivers, Kaeding and Merriman out of that trade, the Giants look awfully stupid right now.

What you say is certainly true, ASwaff, but there is a HUGE difference trying to play in Indianapolis as opposed to trying to play in New York.

That's true, and I'm taking the extra media pressure into account when I say that we need to give it time. I'm just saying that from the time he was in college, I've never understood the hype. Maybe he'll prove me wrong. Philip Rivers and Tony Romo certainly have (again, so far).

New York is a tough town. I think the baseball players, however, are under more of a microscope then football players.

Definitely, Awrigh. Although, I don't see what that has to do with the conversation at hand.

Eli is a talented QB, however he has a lot dare I say Jake Plummer in him. Meaning he hwill have a low completion percentage, and he will throw the ball away from time to time. Yet, despite all that his natural talent cannot be overlooked.

WHAT!! Peyton had fewer weapons??? What was Marshal Faulk??? The Giants SUCK!!!, they cant block, tackle, they jump off sides. I cant see how any of these guys got to the NFL. What was that love pat on Young last week? Other than Barber the Giants are pathetic and yeah if Eli had stuck with San Diego he would have been much better off.

Right now, Eli is in a mental funk. From the first throw last night, you can tell that he was unfocused and anxious. Perhaps he lost confidence after his performance against da Bears. But this is New York, and as a result the two quarterbacks who are really under the microscope more than anyone else is Eli Manning and Chad Pennington automatically. He has to develop some inner strength and grow out of this slump for the sake of this franchise. Here are some more annoyances that Peyton never had to put up with: annoying wide receivers {Shockey, Burress} Every time things go wrong, Shockey throws his hands up in the air and starts barking and Plaxico throws himself on the floor {like he didn't know he dropped that pass} and starts playing lax for the rest of the game. That certainly won't aid Eli. But what Eli needs is mental toughness and that's what he lacks more than anything else.

What Eli lacks is accuracy in his throws. He misses open guys. He doesn't consistently put his receivers in the best positions to catch the ball, the way that his brother does. He just isn't as good. Period.

Eli is at best an average NFL quarterback. The Giants were idiots for giving up so many draft choices to obtain him. He did not want to go to the Chargers and the Giants bailed them out.

The way they wasted draft choices on Eli just shows why the Giants have had problems reaching the playoffs.

Honestly he wasn't that good at Ole Miss. I still can't fathom how he was worth two number one picks(one of which, Philip Rivers, was just as good if not better than Manning). This really isn't that much different from the Falcons trading picks that became LaDainian Tomlinson and Drew Brees for Mike Vick. Do you think either the Giants or Falcons make those same trades again? Probably not. Now, I have to admit, Tom Coughlin isn't the answer as coach, and I feel sometimes a coaching change would help that entire team, and Manning in particular. I wonder if he wishes he had gone to San Diego now? God knows the weather is better...

bwell you my friend are an idiot. Eli threw 8 less TD passes than Peyton in the SEC career, and Eli didn't play much of his freshman year like Peyton did. What a moron.
