What's Left for the Mets to Play For

We know the Mets are going to win the National League East and its almost certain that they are going to finish with the best record in the National League, so what do they have left to play for? Here's some interesting things I'd like to see happen:

  1. September 4-6 they play the Braves at Shea. After the series the Mets will have 24 games left and the Braves will have 23. That means if the Mets are 23 1/2 games up at that point, the Braves will be officially eliminated from the Division race. How great would it be if the Mets came into that series up 20 1/2 games (theyre up 19 now so all they need to do is make up 1 1/2 games over the next 6) and then swept the Braves right out of that division race.
  2. Steve Trachsel has 14 wins now. If he plays every 5th game from now until the end of the season, he will get 6 more starts. Imagine the Mets keep on scoring 10 runs a game for him, and Trachsathon wins all 6 starts. He'll be a 20 game winner. I'd also like to see him raise his current 4.98 ERA to 5.00. 20 wins and a 5 ERA. (Note: If Brandon Webb and Brad Penny tank, and Trax ends up with 5 more wins than anyone else, can he get the Cy Young?!?) Let's go Trax.
  3. Jose Reyes has 16 homers and 16 triples. Who wouldnt like to see him join the 20-20 club. Has anyone ever done that? I'll be rooting for that.
  4. And finally, I want to see a no-hitter. It has to happen this year. You know it does. By the end of the year, they will have set so many individual team records, you know they have to accomplish this one too. How great would it be if Tom Glavine came back and threw a no-hitter in one of his next few starts. Or if someone like Oliver Perez, John Maine, or Dave Williams put it all together for 27 straight batters. It's gotta happen!

I think Reyes would be one of, if not the, first player(s) to have 20 HR, 3B, 2B, and SB.

Willie Mays, 1957 20-20-20-20, also batted .333 but only had 97 rbi Jeff Heath (who?), 1941 and George Brett, 1979 also did 20-20-20 with 100 rbi and +.320 avg's but 18 and 17 sb's respectively... I love freeky stats!

They should play to stay healthy first and to get on a roll before the playoffs start

Beltran has a shot at the Mets single season HR mark (41 by Todd Hundley) if you like the personal stat milestone thing. I like the possibility of Reyes joining Willie Mays in the exclusive 20-20-20-20 club. Mays does suck for not get three more RBI and 5 more hits that year; or else it could have been the super-duper exclusive 100-200-100-20-20-20-20-.300-.400-.600 club ...

They should play for 100 wins. Just cuz. That means 18-13 for the rest of the year, a winning % of .581 (compared to their current .626 overall) This means they should reach it. Especially since they are in the NL, this should be reached.
