It was in this matchup last season that the Bulls burst upon the scene with their 24-19 upset of the then-No. 7 ranked Mountaineers in Morgantown.
This time, in what many are calling the biggest game in school history, South Florida will have the advantage of playing at home in Tampa. However, it won’t have the advantage of catching revenge-minded West Virginia off guard and banged up in the rematch.
Last year, the Bulls bottled up the Mountaineer running so well that USF quarterback Matt Grothe outrushed West Virginia star running back Steve Slaton, 47-43. The Mountaineers finished that contest with only 132 yards on the ground, well under the 33 they had been averaging.
West Virginia quarterback Pat White is coming off one best games of his career, accounting for four touchdowns and completing 18-of-20 for 181 passing yards in last Saturday’s 48-7 rout over East Carolina. If he can avoid Bulls superstar defensive end George Selvie (averaging a national-best 2.8 sacks per game), White will win his duel with Grothe and lead the Mountaineers, who won’t score at least 40 points for only the second time in their last 13 games, to a narrow road victory.
My prediction: Take West Virginia (-7) and the over (56)
