Upon going to ESPN.com and seeing the headline stating that West Virginia had just lost I was surprised. But then I saw the highlights and I understood in full perspective why South Florida won. They won for two reasons.
Reason Number One: They are flat out THAT good, they look like a top 10 team, and right now, they should be ranked higher than teams like Wisconsin, Texas and Rutgers (yes, Rutgers) while the three of these teams have looked good they haven't looked near as dominating as South Florida.
Reason Number Two: Well USF fans won't like this but, hey I think it is true. Pat White was injured midway through. Even if Pat White did play it still would have been up for grabs but lets face it the second Brown checked in for an injured White it was over. He was immediately overwhelmed by a very good USF defense and made stupid decisions causing two turnovers. Although eventually he did settle down by then I think it was just too late. If White had played he would have led them to a score on that last drive and probably a two point conversion which would have forced OT.
But give South Florida credit. They are that good, they are offensively sound with both an effective passng and running game even though they've only put up 28 points per game they have already played two ranked teams and lets face it they dominated both of them without making many offensive errors.
As for South Florida's Defense well they are ready to play big level teams they just held an offense that averages 42+ points to just 13 points. Steve Slaton was only able to put up 48 yards rushing while he usually puts up 127.3 yard rushing. The defense has only let up 14.75 points and keep in mind they've played two top 25 teams one from the VAUNTED SEC and then the of course West Virginia who was supposed to go undefeated this year. If thats not enough for you well then just look at the 5 YES, 5 turnovers they made West Virginia commit too.
If South Florida can play like this they WILL go undefeated. The offense has a good amount of time to settle in and start putting up bigger numbers while they FAU and Central Florida. Then it's off to Rutgers in what will be a good game but if you ask me South Florida should win.
If only South Florida could play Florida every year instead of Florida State. I mean they have by far surpassed both Miami and Florida State as a program.
