Wells Wants to Stay

Red Sox starting lefty David Wells informed General Manager Theo Epstein this weekend that he wished to stay in Boston for what would seem to be his final season in the major leagues. Apparently newly acquired pitcher Josh Beckett and Team Captain Jason Varitek were at the forefront of the lobbying effort, but the final decision came down to Wells' determination that this was a team that could win. Wells and Epstein still plan to have discussions regarding his contract; he's due $2.5 million next year with another $2.5 millions in incentives. Those incentives could be reworked and rewritten.
