If you thought stadium sponsorship was bad in pro sports, well, it just got even worse. The new stadium of the Arizona Cardinals has received a name: University of Phoenix Stadium. Wait a second here...a pro sports stadium named after a college? Something just doesn't seem right about that. In fact, nothing is right with sponsored stadium names in general. There is no reason not to keep a traditional name, like your team name or the name of a founder. A few NFL stadiums still use this, with examples being the Georgia Dome, the Superdome, and Cleveland Browns Stadium.
And if a stadium will use a sponsored name, at least make it one that sounds good. University of Phoenix Stadium and the Colts' upcoming Lucas Oil Stadium are both absolutely dreadful names. Examples of acceptable sponsored names include FedEx Field, Qwest Field, Reliant Stadium, and even Gillette Stadium. I like one AGM user's idea of the Googledome as the name for the Cardinals' stadium. Just give me anything but "University Of Phoenix Stadium." There isn't even a nickname fans can give that, like the Linc or the Trop.
What do you think, AGM users?
