Welcome to University of Phoenix Stadium!

If you thought stadium sponsorship was bad in pro sports, well, it just got even worse. The new stadium of the Arizona Cardinals has received a name: University of Phoenix Stadium. Wait a second here...a pro sports stadium named after a college? Something just doesn't seem right about that. In fact, nothing is right with sponsored stadium names in general. There is no reason not to keep a traditional name, like your team name or the name of a founder. A few NFL stadiums still use this, with examples being the Georgia Dome, the Superdome, and Cleveland Browns Stadium.

And if a stadium will use a sponsored name, at least make it one that sounds good. University of Phoenix Stadium and the Colts' upcoming Lucas Oil Stadium are both absolutely dreadful names. Examples of acceptable sponsored names include FedEx Field, Qwest Field, Reliant Stadium, and even Gillette Stadium. I like one AGM user's idea of the Googledome as the name for the Cardinals' stadium. Just give me anything but "University Of Phoenix Stadium." There isn't even a nickname fans can give that, like the Linc or the Trop.

What do you think, AGM users?

In general, I think that might be a bit of a generalization.

At least it's not a bank, which would have meant the name would be changed 3 times in 10 years.

The rumor I heard for Jacob's Field's new name (which will be effective in the next year or two) is National City Bank Field. National City Field doesn't sound too bad, but when "Bank" is thown in its a mouthful.

At least its not Monster.com park. Also, the one saving grace for this naming is at least it is the University of Phonix Online that bought it and they get to keep a local name on the stadium.

That's a good point. I'm sure most will refer to it as Phoenix Stadium and forget the University part.

the only thing worse is sponsor college bowl games. What team doesn't get excited about going to the "Meineke Car Care Bowl", or the "Capital One Bowl", or the "Outback Steakhouse Bowl", or "MPC Computers Bowl". Good God! That one sounds like a bunch of dweebs invitied to play video games.

Invesco Field at Mile High...I still have to stifle the urge to gag whenever I say the whole name. Yes the Denver Stadium Authority got over $100 million from Invesco but they took one of the five most distintive venue names in all of sport and trashed it. But, the new stadium is nice, even if it's only half as loud.

A) it's not a college, it's a University that has campuses nationwide and there's probably one near your hometown (check your yellow pages) so the reasons for it advertising on a stadium make sense. It's half-classroom, half online and mostly for working adults, not for graduating seniors (for the most part). B) where were you three weeks ago when this happened?

Re: Nickname: Call it "Uni stadium" or, as suggested, Phoenix Stadium (or 'Nix Stadium).
