Weekend of Strange Calls

by user ASwaff

I'm sure there were other strange (or ridiculous) calls this weekend, but I wanted to take a minute to call attention to three of the most ridiculous calls I've ever heard in my life. And all three occurred this weekend. Two occurred in the OU matchup (University of Oklahoma versus University of Oregon).

  • First of all, there was the onside kick by Oregon in the fourth quarter. Watching the replay, it seemed completely clear that an Oregon player touched the ball first. Therefore, there should have been only two issues: 1) Did the player touch the ball before it went ten yards? 2) Did the player interfere with Oklahoma's chance to receive the kick? If you ask me, the answer to both questions is yes. But, my opinion isn't the issue. For some reason, neither of the questions at hand were addressed in the ruling on the replay. The ref came back and merely stated that there was indisputable video evidence that Oklahoma touched the ball. Not that Oklahoma touched the ball first, only that they touched the ball. The ball was given to Oregon.
  • During Oregon's possession, a pass interference was called on an Oklahoma player. In live-action shot, and even more so on replay, it was clear that the ball was tipped by an Oklahoma linebacker, negating any ensuing pass interference as the tip makes the ball fair play. The perfect spiral pass could be seen to change direction, and start tumbling end over end. Easy call. They came back and ruled that there was no indisputable video evidence to overturn the call. That call was not as pivotal as the onside kick call, but the ruling was even worse. It makes me wonder just what constitutes "indisputable video evidence" anymore.
  • During the game tonight between the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins, there was a fourth quarter play in which defensive lineman-turned-linebacker Greg Ellis sacked Mark Brunell. But, there were numerous penalty flags on the play. At first, it appeared as though there would be off-setting penalties. But, one flag got picked up. Dallas was flagged for illegal contact. The flag that was picked up was on a holding call. The call was overturned on the grounds that the defender "ran through the attempted hold." No kidding, that was the ref's ruling, word-for-word. Have you ever heard a ruling so ridiculous in your entire life? What's next - pick up pass interference flags on plays when the receiver catches the ball? Maybe stop flagging 15-yard facemasks if the grab-and-pull doesn't take down the ball carrier. A penalty doesn't stop being a penalty just because the attempted cheating doesn't work. If a defender jumps off sides and the quarterback goes on to throw a touchdown pass, it's still up to the team with the ball to decide if they want to decline or accept the penalty. The flag doesn't just get picked up. My favorite part, though, was the reaction by John Madden and Al Michaels. There was a significant moment of silence when it seemed that the commentators were so confused, they didn't even know what to say about it.

Anyway, I hope these are just some of the early-season kinks that will be worked out as the season progresses. I can only hope. I'll now open this up for discussion. Did anyone else see any calls as absurd as these that you'd like to share?

That debacle at the end of the Oregon/Oklahoma game was very bizzare. I'm sure that the officials bungled that at every step. I only hope that it didn't cost a top-25 team a loss and ultimately a BCS appearance.

The Oregon calls did seem pretty shady and I kept that in mind when voting in the poll. I factored in that Oregon's not as good as their record and Oklahoma isn't as bad as their's. And I'm small-time Oregon fan and I strongly disklike OK.

That's a good point. The other thing for me is that I don't think a win over Oklahoma is that big of a deal right now. Oklahoma's really not looking very good.

Another strange call I saw when I was watching the Clemson, FSU game was a fumble that was recovered by players from both teams apparently at the same time. They reviewed it and the refs came back and said that it was recovered at the same time, so the ball goes to the offense. I had never heard that before.

The end of the Ou Oregon game, was the strangest thing I have ever seen. Im pretty sure that Phil Knight has his own special review booth from his luxury box at the Ducks stadium.

Unfortunately, that's what happens when a Big 12 team plays a Pac 10 team IN a Pac stadium using Pac 10 ref's... yes, Oklahoma got screwed twice in the matter of 5 seconds... but using Pac 10 ref's - did you expect any other outcome? It'll be under review - YEAH RIGHT!

Yeah, I did expect another outcome. Non-conference games with opposing refs in opposing stadiums happen all the time, and I've never seen reviews bungled by the booth review team like that. I'm not screaming like it's a Pac 10 conspiracy, but one way or another, this has to be explained. The guys on the radio said that whoever was responsible for that should feel it, in the form of a suspension. I say he should be fired. If I messed up something that badly at work, I'd be fired. Why not him?

I didnt see the OK/DUCKS call but heard all about it. I did however see the bizarre call on the cowboys, No hold becuase he ran through it? I have actually seen that before, after all most times when a line man or TE is holding its because they were beat and the defender get through the hold ALL THE TIME. I remember last year in the Steelers Colts playoff game several players jumped of sides on both lines, and after point and yelling at one another the refs blew the wistle and congregated only to return and announce that there is no penalty on the play its still 3rd down on whatever yardline!! WTF?? Re-Dues?? come on, football zebras, in both pro and college are getting as bad as nba refs, calling things on homefield advantage and team momentum. Pathetic, I have been an umpire in baseball before and i know i missed some calls, but you try and call the game as best as you can, and there is NO reason not to get a call right AFTER INSTANT REPLAY. Come on, get it right Zebras.

Yeah, I see guys run through holds all the time, but I've never seen a flag picked up just because the guy sacked the QB. And yes, I remember that Steelers game, too. That's exactly what my friends and I were screaming..."What!? There's no re-dos! There's no re-dos in football!" It was like backyard football, when nobody can agree, so you just redo the play.
