Week 17 Headlines from the NFL

  • The Philadelphia Eagles win the NFC East. This is the Eagles fifth divisional title in the last six years. Simply put, the Eagles continue to own the NFC East.
  • The New York Giants have earned the last NFC Wild Card spot. The Giants will face the Eagles in Philadelphia next Sunday at 4:30pm. You all know that the philadelphia fans are going to be ready, right?
  • With the first selection in 2007 NFL Draft, the Oakland Raiders select Brady Quinn, quarterback from Notre Dame. Good luck, Mr. Quinn.
  • The Detroit Lions, the worse organization in all of sports went to Dallas and defeated the Dallas Cowboys. The win prevented the Lions from earning the number 1 pick in the NFL Draft, and prevented the Cowboys from having any chance of winning the NFC East.
  • The loss forces the Cowboys to play the Seattle Seahawks next wekeend. Tony Romo and company looks to be one and done this playoff season.
  • The Pittsburgh Steelers gave soon to be departing head coach Bill Cowher a victory in his last game at the helm.
  • The New York Jets won and clinched a Wild Card spot in the AFC playoffs.
  • No coaches have been fired as of 4:40 PM, EST this December 31st. This, however, is not expected to last for long.
  • The San Diego Chargers wrapped up the number one seed in the AFC with a victory against the hapless Arizona Cardinals.
  • The Kansas City Chiefs made it into the playoffs when the San Francisco 49ers beat the Denver Broncos in overtime.
  • Is there now a full-blown quarterback controversy in Chicago?
  • Even though Brett Favre is going to do his usual "Should I return or should I retire" off-season routine, does anyone really doubt that he will return for another season with the Green Bay Packers?
  • Eight teams, or 25% of the entire league, finished with a record of 8-8. Parity, my friends, has finally arrived in the NFL.

Great points, Christof. Just two request. Could you please take Brad Childress back? Please? I can't stand this guy. He has been a bust as a head coach of the Vikings. You can keep him. Also, have your team beat the damn Giants.

Oh come on, Childress is not that bad. Give it another year. Let me get rid of the bad apples from the Mike Tice era. Have some patience. And don't worry, Eagle will win by 10 on Sunday.

Childress needs to expand their Defensive playbook in order to succeed. They lost so many games because they have no variety in Defensive play calling, and because Johnson was a bust this season

I just have one thing to disagree with you, Christof. This season was not about parity. It was about teams being lousy and playing lousy.

I agree that the level of play has crashed in the NFL. And the outlook is grim. And that is not including the chance for expansion. But, when you have 25% of the league finishing at 8-8, and a whole bunch of other teams finishing at 9-7 or 7-9, that is the definition of parity, no matter what the level of play is.

On the Quinn thing... Would it be unprecidented for him (assuming he was picked by the Raiders) to decline any contract offer with them, so much so, he becomes an unrestricted free agent. At which point, another more desirable team to play for comes calling for him. Or is that not the done thing?

He would definitely not do this, unless he knows he will be able to force a trade, such as what Eli Manning did to stay away from the Chargers. Otherwise, he could only hold out in which case he just wouldn't be playing. That would only hurt Quinn. He wouldn't become a free agent because the Raiders would own him once they drafted him. Chances are if the Raiders don't agree to a deal with Quinn before the draft, they will go another direction.

The 1st QB to ever refuse to play for the team who drafted him was John Elway. The team was the BAL Colts.
