We Have A-Rod; What's Your Team Doing With 30 Mill?

We Have A-Rod; What's Your Team Doing With 30 Mill

So A-Rod is nearing completion of a contract that will pay him about 28 million a season. That's a tremendous amount of money to pay one player. Hell, the Marlins ENTIRE TEAM only cost 32 million, but that's their M.O. The Yankees have money funneling in like few teams in professional sports do. They have the ability to pay one athlete 30 million dollars if they so choose, that's their M.O.

Personally I'm not against it. Naysayers will claim that your better off spending 10 million on three players, for example, a valid point. However, in order for that logic to work your team has to spend said 30 million dollars responsibly. And truly not many teams in the MLB currently do that.

So Yankee fans, next time someone mentions how the Yanks "spend like lunatics" and that is "the only reason they win feel" free to remind them how their team is spending said 30 million dollars this year.

And I can't think of a better place to start than with our crosstown rival.

(All Salaries for '08; credit to http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/ I don't know who set this page up but their my hero)

Mets:

  • Carlos Delgado ($16 M)
  • Scott Schoeneweis ($3 M)
  • Orlando Hernandez ($6.5 M)
  • Guillermo Mota ($3.2 M) (Now steroid free!)

And I didn't even have to include Pedro's dead arm for 11M About $29 M

Cardinals:

  • Scott Rolen ($12 M)
  • Jim Edmonds ($8 M)
  • Juan Encarnacion ($6.5 M)
  • Joel Pineiro ($5 M)

About $31.5 M

White Sox:

  • Jose Contreras ($10 M)
  • Jim Thome ($14 M); estimated, partially paid by Philly)
  • Joe Crede ($6 M)** (Estimated, Arbitration Eligible)

About $30 M

Mariners:

  • Richie Sexson ($14 M)
  • Jose Vidro ($8.5 M)
  • Jarrod Washburn ($10 M)

About $33 M

Blue Jays:

  • Troy Glaus ($12.75 M)
  • Frank Thomas ($8 M)
  • B.J. Ryan ($10 M)

About $31 M

Braves:

  • Mike Hampton ($15 M); Yes, he still makes $15M. And yes the Braves have to pay $5M to buy him out next year)
  • Chipper Jones ($15 M)

About $30 M

Giants:

  • Ray Durham ($7.5 M)
  • Dave Roberts ($6.5 M)
  • Randy Winn ($8 M)
  • Omar Vizquel ($5 M)
  • Rich Aurilia ($4.5 M)

You could really make a case everyone on their roster is overpaid. See Zito, Barry

About $32 M

I could keep going.

Just because other teams aren't fiscally responsible doesn't mean the Yankees are irresponsible for investing so much in one player.

Great job! This puts A-Rod's salary into perspective. Yeah $30 mil is a lot, but gimme 1 A-Rod for $30 mil than a few of these garbage $7-10 mil guys for the same money!

Ummm.. What about the ENTIRE Rays team? Less than $30 mil bought them 66 wins.

The Brewers were over .500 with an entire infield making around $2 million combined. Hope you enjoy October heartbreak for $30 million a year.

A roster of nothing but AAA players, costing something in the neighborhood of $10,640,000 (28 players to a roster * MLB minimum salary of $380,000), could buy you about 50 wins. But after that point, every successive win costs more. What I'm saying is that $30 million for A-Rod, if he contributes 10-12 wins and pushes the Yankees into that lucrative 90+ win area (which he did last year), could be a bargain compared to the $30 million Tampa paid for all of their 66 wins, because 50 of them could have come for $10.6 million, and they are not in the 90+ W "sweet spot" for playoff revenues.

Agreed. It's not so much the first 65-75 wins that matter, it's the last 20 that get you into the postseason that make the biggest difference.

When a player at $20+ million gets you those extra 20 wins, let me know... (hint: I won't be waiting by the phone)

In theory, everything works in theory. No way a AAA team would win 50 games. These teams agree with me

Very good article...Yankees having over 4 million fans helps them to pay their salaries...will be interesting to see at end of offseason if Yankees payroll has gone up or down. So far it looks like it is on the way up.

People like quoting his salary against the Marlins, but if you watched the Marlins you'd know that this just explains why they are in last place. And that that number will go up or they lost Hanley Ramirez when the time comes. Marlins are pathetic, yet they have won two World Series in last 10 years. Talk about schizophrenic.
