We Deserve Better

In the 2005 draft, the Detroit Lions made history by choosing their third straight wide receiver. In the last article written about the Lions, I detailed some of the problems this draft choice, Mike Williams, had. Apparently, I was underestimating these troubles.

Mike Williams got fined around a reported $400,000 last season. He made $230,000 in his rookie season. So basically, he was playing for free.

All for being late to meetings and team practices in addition to never really being in shape. He is so overweight that some discussions have been had about changing his position to a tight end. In other words, not only did he not contribute anything on the field, apparently he didn't put an effort to either.

Great draft pick.

Now the former USC star is fighting for a job with the Lions, as our fourth or fifth receiver. He could realistically not be part of the Lion's roster when the season begins.

You know what? Good riddance. I really would prefer he no longer be a member of the Lions organization at this point. For years we have been losers because of this type of attitude. Who wants a player with no brains and no dedication to anything, not even his own personal welfare?

Forget bringing him into the preseason. Just cut him and get it over with. He can take his meaningless touchdown and one-handed catch with him.

Let some other team, if any will have him, deal with his bulky problems. We deserve better.

Wow, so he was actually paying THEM to play for the team, thats crazy! So what are your feelings on Charles Rogers? Would you rather have him or Williams? I'd take Williams, he is faster and a better jumper than Charles Rogers, right?

Thats a good question.

The thing to keep in mind is that unlike Mike, Rogers isn't fighting for his spot on the roster despite having arguably more troubles in his time with the team. Mike Williams hasn't played consistant high-level football for quite a while now, and he is way out of shape.

Add to that personal problems and a lack of motivation and I'd take Rogers easily.

And I once thought Williams was going to be pro-bowl caliber WR. See, this is why I write for AGM and why I don't scout for an NFL team! :)

Yeah, looking at his college stats, he seemed destined to have a bright future in the NFL. Declaring early proved to be the downfall of his career. Is there any team worse at drafting than the Lions? Harrington (who I still think has some promise), Rogers, Williams, etc. Hopefully (and in my opinion) Bullocks (strong safety, 2nd round) and Brian Calhoun (running back, 3rd round) will prove to be steals for them. I don't know why they passed up Leinart in order to take Ernie Sims, though. Do they really think Kitna and McCown are going provide improvement upon last year?

That's crazy. To make it to the NFL, and then basically have no income b/c your too stupid to keep your nose out of trouble.

Except that the $230k doesn't include a multi-million signing bonus. Williams is guaranteed $10.5 million (of $13.5m) over the life of his rookie contract.

Thats true DNL. But technically he was still losing money to play because he already had the signing bonus no matter what.

Signing bonuses are paid more up front and reported further into the contract against the cap. He probably got more than 20% of that signing bonus already, however he most definitely pushed back escalators (play time bonuses) to the end of his contract.

The problem with Williams is he took that year off because of the Clarett ruling. It really seems like he wasn't ready to play football again and that is too bad.

Ufgators - I posted a full analysis of the Lions as a team on my blog, though two parts still need to be posted, which is linked under the post above, but I do think Calhoun and Bullocks will have an impact. I also don't think Millen is a terrible drafter, as he has picked up good players like Kevin Jones, Roy Williams, and Boss Bailey.

Jones-Maybe; Williams-yes; Boss Bailey recorded one sack, one interception, 59 tackles (39 solo) and two passes defensed in 11 games this season in Detroit. He missed five games and finished the season on injured reserve.

How about Detroit sports: the Tigers, Red Wings, and Pistons were/will be #1 seeds in the playoffs this year. And then...the Lions. A strange city for sports.

But Boss had an excellent rookie season where he recorded almost 90 tackles and played all 16 games. He is a solid linebacker when he stays healthy.

Jones also had a great rookie season and then struggled last year with injuries and a lack of carries. He should bounce back huge this year. In any case, he was, and is, a huge upgrade over the running backs we had before him (remember James Stewert?)

oh for sure. I hope Jones proves to be an excellent pick. He broke out at about the same time Julius Jones did.
