This season, Ricky Williams has broken his left arm, severely cut his foot, spent time in a hyperbaric chamber, and contemplated life in the Toronto Argonauts organization. All of this in a three month time span. Quite a summer for an NFL star that is sitting out an NFL season for violating the substance abuse policy.
The odd thing is, though, he wouldn't mind coming back to Toronto, Ontario once his NFL days are over.
It is a notion that would be of great benefit to Ricky, the Argos, and the CFL. Take a look at his career in pro football, a man that does not like the spotlight, but loves to play the game of football. The prospect of having a player like Ricky in the CFL would be a benefit for the league as well. The league has tried to break into the big network television deals in the past, see the ESPN deals (when ESPN was first starting off) and the expansion into the US. But nothing has brought the major networks calling, perhaps a Ricky Williams or another high-profile player could do that.
"I was thinking it wouldn't be bad to come back up here and kind of follow the same steps as Pinner -- play here a couple years and maybe get a chance to coach up here," Williams said Tuesday. "Because I really like Toronto, I really like this organization ... you can live here, you know? You feel like you have a life.
"I come to work, I go home, play with my kid, walk to the store. It's really nice. I get to teach. It's wonderful here."
"Ricky is special," Argos president Keith Pelley said. "He's a fantastic person with great morals and values. Loves Toronto, loves the Canadian Football League, loves Pinball (Michael Clemons)... after his NFL career is over, we would of course entertain [the thought] of him coming back."
A life outside of the spotlight, doing the thing that you love. Can there be anything better?
