Born on January 15, 1973 in Hampton, Virginia, Wayne Gomes (Wayne Maurice Gomes) played for the Philadelphia Phillies, San Francisco Giants and Boston Red Sox over the course of his 6 year career. Gomes broke into the bigs on June 13, 1997 with the Philadelphia Phillies, and put up a 4.24 ERA in 93.1 innings pitched in 1998, his rookie year.

There is some disagreement on what was Wayne Gomes's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1999, when he posted a 4.26 ERA, notched 19 saves and struck out 58 batters. However, others believe that it was 1998, when he posted a 4.24 ERA and struck out 86 batters.
