Clippers' leadoff batter, Brandon Watson, extended his streak to 43 games on June 17th, which is now a new International League record. Although the Clippers lost against Ottawa, 9-8 in the 11th inning, the game was still a win in Watson's eyes, as he broke a 95 year record that was set by Rochester's Jack Lelivelt.
The 25-year-old center fielder needed three at bats to get his single and break the prestigious record. He flied out in the first inning, lined out in the third, and then, finally, ripped a single in the sixth inning against Ottawa's starting pitcher, JD Durbin.
"It's unbelievable. I don't have any words for it," the 25-year-old center fielder said. "I believe that I've been fortunate to surpass such a record." He has batted .360 (63-for-175) with six doubles, a triple, 19 runs scored and 10 RBIs since the streak began on May 1st. No one has hit in 43 straight games in the Minor Leagues since Orlando Moreno in 1961, who played for Louisville (AA). He is 27 games shy of breaking the most consecutive games with a hit in the Minor Leagues, and that was set by Wichita's Joe Wilholt in 1919. How far will Brandon Watson go?
