Watson sets new record

Clippers' leadoff batter, Brandon Watson, extended his streak to 43 games on June 17th, which is now a new International League record. Although the Clippers lost against Ottawa, 9-8 in the 11th inning, the game was still a win in Watson's eyes, as he broke a 95 year record that was set by Rochester's Jack Lelivelt.

The 25-year-old center fielder needed three at bats to get his single and break the prestigious record. He  flied out in the first inning, lined out in the third, and then, finally, ripped a single in the sixth inning against Ottawa's starting pitcher, JD Durbin.

"It's unbelievable. I don't have any words for it," the 25-year-old center fielder said. "I believe that I've been fortunate to surpass such a record." He has batted .360 (63-for-175) with six doubles, a triple, 19 runs scored and 10 RBIs since the streak began on May 1st. No one has hit in 43 straight games in the Minor Leagues since Orlando Moreno in 1961, who played for Louisville (AA). He is 27 games shy of breaking the most consecutive games with a hit in the Minor Leagues, and that was set by Wichita's Joe Wilholt in 1919. How far will Brandon  Watson go?

I sitll think its amazing that the Nats haven't called him up to the majors to replace their current center fielder, Nook Logan (.215 BA, 0 HR, 5 RBI). I guess its to allow him to keep the streak going. If they don't bring him up the day after his streak is over, they're idiots.

Superstar Nook Logan has been a huge disappointment. I would think a 45 game hitting streak deserves a promotion.

At Least the Nats have some sort of hope in the pipeline

Nationals need Watson now but guess they have to wait till the streak is over. They are probably hoping it ends really soon.

You know what's funny? 2 years ago, before Watson first got called up, the Nationals lost 13 straight 1 run games. The Nats then called him up on August 7th, 2005, to help them offensively. He had a .306 career minor league average and a .324 average (.355 in the AAA) with 38 stolen bases that year in the minors. Two days later, August 9th, he played his first game, and he didn't disappoint. He hit a ground rule double in the 3rd inning and a homer in the fourth to end their one run losing streak (6-5). The Nats' outfield is comprised of Ryan Church, Nook Logan, Austin Kearns, and Ryan Langerhans. Nothing really that great. They can definitely put Watson in, but because he didn't do that well after his first game, he never had the chance to come back in. We better see him on the Nationals in July or latest August, UNLESS, the Nats think it's hopeless and just want to give up this season. :P
