The result speaks for itself against a farnborough team that has seen off the likes QPR and Preston at home this season.
On a rock hard pitch the game started a close affair with WIFC playing the best football early on but neither team really creating goal scoring opportunities. Some neat exchanges between the midfield of Chris Westcott, Rob Sterry, Warren Flanagan and Paul Whittenbury kept the ball mainly in the boro half.
WIFC eventually took a deserved lead through a bizarre own goal created by hard work from the Westcott and Sterry. The boro keeper booted the ball into the centre backs arse from 5 yards and it rebounded into the net. It was no more than WIFC deserved.
WIFC made a couple of changes on the half hour and took charge of the game. With the defence seeing off the boro strikers with ease and keeping their chances minimal.
Just before half time saw boro get a leveller when the wifc defence (which had been superb) allowed the boro player time to fire a deflected shot past Mat Ball. 1-1
half time 1-1
The second half saw the introduction of Vic on the right and Simon Pryor was pushed up top.
Boro had the best of the opening 5-10 mins of the second half but the defence held up to their challenge superbly. WIFC soon picked up the tempo and captain Westcott grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck and began to run the game with the snappy ginger elf in the middle. They won all the headers and tackles and began to create a wave of chances for the hornets.
The second goal soon followed when chav played in sterry who hoofed the ball into the air and simon took advantage of slack defending and fired accurately into the corner from 10 yards.
At 2-1 bally made a vital save at his feet to keep wifc ahead. This spurred us on and Mark Brennan, Joel Moody and Sterry with a thuderbolt slice against the bar, all had good chances.
Finally man of the match chris wescott scored a fine curling effort in the top corner from the edge of the box to make the game safe and cap a fine individual perfomance but it was also one of the best TEAM performances for sometime. Everyone played their part.
The final 10 mins of the game saw Vic and Chris Dundon go close. Boro new it was all over when fox in the box dave messenger came on up top and could have scored if it wasn't for a good clearance from the boro player.
A brilliant performance and some impressive individual displays saw WIFC record one of their best results of the season.
