A 12th minute penalty was enough to see Watford take home three points, their second win of the season at Upton Park, after they knocked the Hammers out of the FA Cup two weeks before by the same scoreline.
As Darius Henderson chased down a ball into the box, Anton Ferdinand made the wrong choice and inexplicably pulled him to the ground. The beleagured Hornets hitman got up to slot home a cool finish from the spot for his first goal in the Premier League, and his first since May 21, 2006.
The game was not without its controversy as Gavin Mahon brought down West Ham captain and England Under-21 starlet Nigel Reo-Coker inside the box for a penalty. For both teams it was the first time they'd been awarded a penalty this season. Hornets skipper Mahon was lucky not to see red for the challenge as he could easily have been viewed as the last man, as it was he stayed on the pitch and Marlon Harewood stepped up to take the penalty for West Ham. Jubilation followed in the Watford end as, despite sending Ben Foster the wrong way, Harewood sent his shot a yard wide of the right hand post.
West Ham failed to recover their shattered confidence after this and Watford saw the game through to the end in relative ease. The Hornets remain bottom of the table, but with a game in hand and form on their side (relatively speaking of course!) they have reason to be optimistic about their chances of staying up - on the other hand the Hammers luck goes from bad to worse and they look a beaten side, destined for the Championship next season.
