Water Cooler:USA @ Costa Rica World Cup 2010 Qualifier Open Thread


The United States look to maintain their unbeaten record in the hexagonal stage of the 2010 World Cup Qualification round in San Jose, Costa Rica. The Ticos have never lost to the US at the Estadio Ricardo Saprissa.

If Costa Rica wins they overtake first place from the US. The winner in all likelihood is in the driver's seat to get one of three guaranteed CONCACAF spots in the World Cup.

Just 30 seconds in Andy Herron plays a dangerous ball in and the shot is deflected off of a US defender. The ball was sent back in and Costa Rica was whistled for a foul.

GOAL FOR COSTA RICA! It's Alvaro Sabario with a rocket of a strike that has beaten Tim Howard. He went around Pablo Mastroeni and Jose Torres, and fired it past the outstretched arms of Tim Howard.


Just 2 minutes in and Costa Rica is 1-0 up!

17th minute: Junior Diaz gets to do what he wants as he crosses the ball in for Saborio, and sees his header saved by Tim Howard but bobbled out of play for a corner kick. Costa Rica wastes it.


Marvell Wynne is having a car crash game so far. As things stand Costa Rica will overtake the US as top team in CONCACAF in qualifying standings.

34th minute: The US has ZERO shots on goal. Costa Rica has three, and two goals to show for it. A long throw-in coming from Oguchi Onyewu. Torres and Donovan have a good give-and-go as that is nervously away. Beasley crosses and fails at his job again.

36th minute: Bryan Ruiz just turned Wynne inside-out but the Toronto FC defender does a good job clearing the ball.....which the US gives up again. Costa Rica is even stealing the ball on American throw-ins.

37th minute: More hesitant defending by the US. Beasley is having a nightmare of a first half. Open header for Saborio (I think), heads it across the face of goal and headed out for a corner. So much space for the Costa Ricans. They have put on a clinic. Saborio turns and fires on the shot on the corner kick and just goes over the bar. He nearly made it 3-0.

50th minute: Hey look a US shot! Michael Bradley, the coach's son, goes for a long range blast which ricochets wide of the post for a corner kick. Donovan takes it short....waste of a cross as it was too long AND Clint Dempsey handled the ball. Lucky he didn't get a yellow card.

53rd minute: WHAT A MISSED CHANCE BY THE US! Donovan flicks the ball for Altidore, but Dempsey was also there and they were confused as whom should latch onto the ball. Altidore did and has it knocked away for a corner. US goes short again and Beasley crosses it and again they waste it. The crosses and set plays have been awful from the Americans.


Michael Bradley has just been booked for a rough challenge and will MISS his next match against Honduras this Saturday.

Bradley has to go if we lose to Honduras this Saturday.


His tactics and general coaching of this team is crap. Wynne playing the full 90 is suicidal. As a Toronto FC fan I've been witness to his retarded plays and multiple handballs, including two that lost us 3 points in total.


He is not a strong leader. As soon as he gets out of playing home games against the usual gang of suspects and weaker teams the US is 100% different.
