The Jets came out with more emotion today at Giants Stadium, but in the end, the result was the same as the Jets fell to the Redskins 23-20 in overtime.
Right off the bat you saw increased emotion in the Jets, when Leon Washington returned the game's opening kickoff 86 yards to paydirt giving the Jets a 7-0 lead. Leon became the 11th player in NFL history to run 3 kickoffs back for TDs, also a team record. Washington responded with a drive resulting in a 46 yard field goal by Suisham, making the score 7-3. The long awaited return of Kellen Clemens began on the ensuing drive, going 15 plays, ending in a Mike Nugent 29 yard field goal, moving the lead to 10-3 as the first quarter came to a close.
Early in the second quarter, Joe Kowalewski caught a 2 yard TD pass from Clemens to extend the lead to 17-3. The half finished with 2 field goals by Suisham of the Redskins, from 40 yards out and 22 yards out, connected by an onside kick recovered after the first one. The first half came to a close at 17-9 Jets.
After a 40 yard field goal in the 3rd quarter made the score 17-12, the big play happened in the 4th quarter. The Jets were on a 63 yard drive going into the fourth quarter, when deep in the Redskins zone, Clemens hit a pass to Jerricho Cotchery. He was hit immediately and fumbled turning the ball over and ending a long drive with no points. Washington went right down the field and scored on a Clinton Portis run with 11:06 left in the game. A 2 point conversion made the score 20-17 Redskins.
Late in the game, the Jets did get the ball back and Kellen Clemens led an impressive drive, coverting a big 3rd and 10 to Justin McCairens with 2:52 left, and converting another on foot with 1:45 left. Mike Nugent hit a field goal with 10 seconds left to tie the game at 20.
The Jets won the overtime toss, moved the ball to around the 40 before punting. The Redskins took over and drove into field goal range before Suisham hit the game winning field goal from 46 yards out with 7:43 left in OT, moving the Redskins record to 5-3 and the Jets falling to 1-8 going into their bye week.
