Want to Understand Baseball?

by user Tmizzle

I have a somewhat embarrassing revelation to share with everyone.  I have considered myself a diehard baseball fan, but until today, I had never seen Field of Dreams.

It's considered by many to be the greatest baseball movie ever made.  The storyline is about, well, watch the movie, you'll see.

Why haven't I ever watched it?  That's a difficult question.  I'd seen "great" movies before, but in most cases, I hadn't felt they lived up to their hype.  For that reason, I avoided Field of Dreams.  Because it was about baseball, quite possibly my favorite thing in the entire world, I didn't want to ruin my perception of the movie by actually watching it.  I know, that's a little weird, and it doesn't seem to make a lot of sense, but it's how I felt.

I decided today that I would have to take that risk.  I watched Field of Dreams, and I absolutely loved it.  It was everything I had hoped it would be.  I got chills at least a dozen times, probably more.  When James Earl Jones makes his speech that concludes with, "...the people will come, Ray...people will most definitely come," I was downright shivering.

Now, in the past few days, I've read some things on this site that disparage baseball.  I think I even read one comment that said baseball wasn't a sport because it didn't involve guys hitting each other.

For anyone who doesn't understand why people love baseball, watch this movie.  If you still don't get it, I can't help you and I doubt you'll ever understand it.

Switch Major League and Field of Dreams, drop Bull Durham down a couple spots, and put the Sandlot at number 4, and that works for me.

For my 2nd Baseketball reference in the same day...is that technically a "baseball movie"? i mean, it has a great cameo by Reggie himself..."

Coop: Reggie. [takes his hand and shakes it]

Reggie: Coop. Nice going out there.

Coop: Thanks, man. But, you know, I gotta tell you, it's 'cause of you that I'm here.

Reggie: That's nice to know. I brought this for ya. [hands him the deflated LA-Z-BOY] I saw some kid try to leave the ball park with it. You've gotta hang on to that. [Coop flashes a quick smile] I got the two home run balls I hit in the world series. [casts his eyes down] Some wretched little shit got the third one.

Coop: [shakes his head, not able to say he was that shit] That sucks, dude. [takes a quick glance at the exit] I gotta get my trophy. Uh, maybe we can have a hot dog sometime. [a quick handshake good-bye]

The O'Donnell/Davis effect is more than offset by Tom Hanks in that movie. I think it's worthy of its number two ranking.

#2? Ahead of "Bull Durham"? Ahead of "Eight Men Out"? Interesting.

I wasn't as impressed with Bull Durham as everybody else. I liked it, don't get me wrong, but it's only number 5 on my list. I actually haven't seen Eight Men Out, but I plan to very soon.

If anyone's interested, I'm going to watch (and rewatch, in some cases) as many baseball movies as I can get my hands on in the next couple weeks, then I'll go ahead and give a top-10 of my favorites. By the way, does Baseketball technically count as a baseball movie?

Field of Dreams, Eight Men Out, and A League of Their Own are three of my favorite baseball movies. "Frequency" with Dennis Quaid and James Cavaziel could be considered a borderline baseball movie because an important plot device centered around the 1969 New York Mets. It's hard to describe in a short comment but watch the movie sometime.

Field of Dreams is the kind of movie you never forget. When those players came out of the cornfield was the highlight to me. Eight Men Out was a great movie but seemed like the courtroom was very dark...guess that was for effect. Pride of the Yankees and Babe Ruth Story were good movies but William Bendix as Babe Ruth was bad casting. He looked about as much as Babe Ruth as Rosie O'Donnell looks like Pam Anderson. Nothing against William Bendix as his portrayal of Chester A. Riley in both the radio and TV version of Life of Riley was great acting.

Here is my top five in no particual order but still in some particular order

1) Bull Durham ( I laugh so hard when I watch this movie. I was a cather growing up so I relate)

2) Field of Dreams. What kid doesnt want to go play catch with his dad.

3) The Sandlot. The most underappreciated movie ever. Wendy Pheffercorn? Squints? Your killing me Smalls. Benny the Jet Rodriguez. Need I say more

4)Baseketball. Not a real baseball movie but I nearly piss my self every time I watch it. Plus Yasmine Bleath is a bonus also

5) Major League. So many laughs and I dont know where to begin.
