Walt Holmer (Walter R. Holmer) was born on December 5, 1902 in Moline, Illinois. After going to high school at Moline (IL), Holmer attended Northwestern University. Holmer made his professional debut in the NFL in 1929 with the Chicago Bears. He played for the Chicago Bears, Chicago Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates over the course of his 5 year career.

Most people believe that 1932 was Walt Holmer's best year.
