Walt French (Walter Edward French) was born on July 12, 1899 in Moorestown, New Jersey. After going to high school at Moorestown (NJ), French attended Army College and Rutgers State University of New Jersey.

He made his Major League debut on September 15, 1923 for the Philadelphia Athletics. In 1926, his rookie year, he hit .305 with 1 home run and 36 RBI. French played for the Philadelphia Athletics for his entire 6 year career.

There is some disagreement on what was Walt French's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1926, when he hit for a .305 average. However, others believe that it was 1927, when he hit for a .304 average.

French also played a year in the NFL as well. He made his professional debut in the NFL in 1925 with the Pottsville Maroons. He played for the Pottsville Maroons for his entire 1 year career.
