Walker Ranks The Top Five Teams in the NFC... You may be Suprised

This past weekend was great for the NFL and while it was fun to watch a senior citizen get another win as a quarterback, the biggest question from the last weekend is who the best team in the NFC is? The hierarchy in the AFC is easy to figure out, but the mediocrity in the NFC has created a log jam, and right now any number of teams could break through and make their way to Arizona for the Super Bowl. Despite all the confusion, here are the top five teams in the NFC, as of this week.

  1. Dallas Cowboys : The Cowboys are the best team in the NFC. Sunday’s game against New England proved the Cowboys are not the best team in the NFL. Luckily for them, they only need to worry about NFC teams. Tony Romo and the Cowboys offense appear to be back on track and for three quarters they were able to keep pace with the Patriots. The Cowboys continue to battle injuries, but have found ways to fill the voids. As the season progresses, they are one of the few teams that have the opportunity to get healthier as the season progresses. This will be a key to the Cowboys success as the season progresses. Dallas needs help in the secondary. Cornerbacks Anthony Henry and Terrence Newman are battling injuries. Brady and the Patriots exploited their weak defense on Sunday, and NFC teams will make the adjustments to do the thing. Health will be the key for Dallas as they advance through the season.
  2. New York Giants : The Giants may be the most surprising team on this list. After a horrible training camp and a 0-2 start, the Giants looked dead in the water. Currently the Giants are on a four game winning streak, and appear ready to go on a run. At a second glance the Giants are a very talented team. Eli Manning is in the midst of his best season as a pro. They are working with a stable of tailbacks and it is working for them. More importantly the Giants defense has transformed into a group of attack dogs. The front four embarrassed the Philadelphia Eagles offensive line two weeks ago, and they made Joey Harrington’s Monday Night Football début a disaster. Despite being a team with flaws, the Giants are hot, and they are playing with a purpose.
  3. Green Bay Packers : Brett Favre is the aging gunslinger, looking to go out on a high note, and right now he is on pace to do exactly that. The key to the Packers offense is Favre, not because he is a future Hall of Fame quarterback, but because Green Bay has no rushing offense. Ultimately that will be the undoing of the Packers. Opposing defenses will play their safeties extra deep, and drop back into coverage, because there is no reason to respect the run. The Green Bay defense is extraordinary. A veteran secondary matched with a young and athletic front seven is a great combination, and it is the reason the Packers are in the top five in the NFC.
  4. Washington Redskins : This is not your father’s Redskins team, and to be honest that may not be a good thing. Nonetheless, Washington is off to a 3-2 start on the season. Jason Campbell is maturing into a Pro-Bowl caliber quarterback. He has the ability to make plays both in the pocket and on the run. Greg Williams has his defensive unit performing at an elite level once again. This is very important because the Skins struggle to accomplish anything on offense. Washington is averaging 20.2 points a game, and that number drops to 16 points in their losses. Despite all of these, injuries will determine the Skins season. Half of their offensive line is hurt, and their top two receivers are battling injuries. Nothing can derail a promising season faster than the injury bug.
  5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers : Jeff Garcia and Joey Galloway may be the oldest quarterback to wide-receiver duo in the history of the NFL, but that doesn’t matter as long as they continue to get the job done. Both of them are having standout years late in their career. In many ways it’s the perfect match for an aging Buccaneers team that appeared to lose a step over the past few seasons. The Bucs are far from a powerhouse, but they play scrappy enough to knock off most teams in the NFC.

I dont mind this list. I am not personally sold on the redskins yet but only time will tell.

I think the Giants are better than the Packers because they have a better balance of run versus pass but I think you should probably have the Packers ahead of the Giants beacause the Packers easily handled the Giants in their head to head matchup and have a better overall record.

I think The Buccaneers have potential but they could be in trouble if they do not find a way to impove thier rushing game.

I agree with you. The Redsins made this list because their defense has played well all season. It has been their offense that has let them down. The Giants went ahead of the Packers simply because of the balance and the ease they beat the Falcons with. That being said the argument to put the Packers ahead of them is one that I would listen to and accept.

I'm not sold on any of the NFC East, but man I am sure it's going to be a war for that division title.

Because the NFC South North and West are that strong?

Tampa Bay addressed their rushing concerns by acquiring Michael Bennet. I dunno if that will help much but at least they got someone; Earnest Graham was definitely not the answer. I think the Green Bay/Washington matchup over the weekend was a sloppy game, and shows that neither of these teams are that good. Dallas may be the best team in the NFC, but they are simply not that good. They haven't played a single division opponent on the road yet, and will get quite a few more blemishes along the way. I really haven't been impressed with a single team in the NFC thus far, although the Giants have come a long way in the last four weeks. Sitting at 0-2, down 17 to Washington on the road, many would have considerd their season was over at that point. But, since then, that veteran defense has buckled down. and if Manning can keep his head on straight, they may be dangerous down the road.

Kevin Faulk is a very Poor man's Marshall Faulk. Bennett is a poor man's Kevin Faulk. Therefore, Bennett is a homeless man's Marshall Faulk. What does this mean? He's a fast blippy guy that's hard to stop, but can't grind it out to save his life

Good list. I agree except I would switch Tampa Bay and Washington. Redskins are not well coached, weak in fundamentals, while the Bucs have a driven Jon Gruden at the helm and the underrated Monte Kiffin running a resurgent defense. Giants are benefitting from a soft schedule right now. Jets, Falcons are hideous right now, and upcoming games against atrocious Dolphins and 49ers. Cowboys at Giants shaping up as a big battle.

I can't rip the list for one reason...

"as of this week"

However, I will say that this list will change significantly in another 6 weeks and by the end of the season...I'd be willing to bet that 3 or 4 teams come off the list, however, fully knowing that the NFC West and South essentially...blow, does limit options (and the North isn't exactly awesome in and of itself)...

The Cowboys achillies' heel is, once again, the secondary... with games leading up to the bye including San Fran and "@" Miami (london), the giants will probably be 6-2 and modestly projecting the rest of the season, I can't see them winning less the 8 games (for sure) and more than likely 10 games...perhaps 11 if New England lays down at the end of the season...and who would think that the giants would be happy to play the pats with a possible division title on the line...hahaha (of course it won't be because philly will be completing a 10 game winning streak...but i digress...)

I have no doubt that this list will shift and move as the season progresses. As of right now none of these teams are holding onto their spots, and there is a laundry list of teams that can jump on it. The NFC is a very mediocre division.

The Pack will probably finish with a nice 10-6, 11-5 or so record, but they won't do anything once they get to the playoffs with absolutely no running game to speak of.

It doesn't matter. The NFC is just fodder for the pinball offenses of the AFC this season. Anybody has a shot in the NFC, but nobody can hang with the Colts or Pats (even the Chargers/Steelers may make some noise this post-season.

Currently the Giants are playing better football. They are on a four game win streak and both sides of the ball are working. The Packers blew a game to the Bears, and they barely got away from the Redskins. They are being exposed.

I'm not ssaying I disagree with the majority of the top 5 picks here, but perhaps it would be better to consider what 6 teams are going to the playoffs for the NFC. Point being that it doesn't matter that people think the NFC East Redskins, Cowboys, and Giants are among the top 5 teams, because it is unlikely that the wild card teams will both be from the same division. (But who knows?) Basically a strong team in the East could be shafted by a weaker team from, let's say, the West. With that in mind, at this point of the season, the playoffs would like something like this:

NFC North- Green Bay Packers NFC South- Tampa Bay Bucs NFC East- Dallas Cowboys NFC West- Arizona Cards(see what I mean?) Wildcards: NY Giants, Carolina Panthers

Side note... why do sports commentators still talk of the Eagles making the playoffs? I don't think they are a bad team or anything, but look at the uphill battle they have after already losing both division games.

The Bucs might be off that list soon; depending on how they deal with the plague of injuries they have had in the past month.
