Waived by Sixers, Mashburn announces retirement

Jamal Mashburn retired from the NBA after he was waived by the Philadelphia 76ers. Mashburn never played for the Sixers. He was inactive for the last two years. He was an All-Rookie selection in 1994 and an All-NBA selection in 2003.

Mash had a pretty solid career, better than most of his college peers (*cough*Laettner*cough*). I wonder why it took him so long to officially retire. NBA teams have paid salaries to retired players.

He's going to go down as one of the game's most overrated players, but that's mostly a function of the odd free agency marketplace, where solid players get top dollar -- and are suddenly "overpaid."
