WR Robert Ferguson signs with Minnesota Vikings

Veteran receiver Robert Ferguson agreed to terms with the Minnesota Vikings on Tuesday.

Ferguson, who was cut by NFC North rival Green Bay on Friday, also visited his hometown Houston Texans before deciding to join the Vikings' inexperienced group of receivers.

Ferguson was drafted in the second round by the Packers in 2001 and will immediately become the most experienced and productive receiver on the Vikings. Despite battling numerous injuries, Ferguson has caught 116 passes for 1,577 yards and 12 touchdowns in his six years in the league.

Before his arrival, Bobby Wade had the best numbers on the team with 101 catches and just two touchdowns in his career.

The Texans were believed to be the favorite to land Ferguson, given his roots in the city and relationship with offensive coordinator and former Packers head coach Mike Sherman.

Ferguson worked out for the Vikings on Sunday, flew to Houston on Monday and returned to the Twin Cities to sign with Minnesota on Tuesday.

Ferguson started 26 games in six seasons, but injuries kept his career from taking off in Green Bay. The only year he played all 16 games was 2002.

He had a career-high 38 catches and four touchdowns in 2003, when he started 12 games, but missed the final 12 games of last season with a foot injury and also had a knee injury in the final weeks of 2005.

I still don't see Ferguson as a top option in Minnesota. They still have Troy Williamson, who they were extremely high on when they drafted him, and then went out and picked up Sidney Rice in the draft this year.

Troy Williamson is the only player in the nfl to be afraid of the football. TO consider him a talent is rediculous

If you read what I said False Prophet, I said the VIKINGS were high on Williamson when they drafted him. They did spend the 7th overall pick on the guy in 2005. Until someone steps up and takes it from him, he probably is the de facto #1 WR in Minnesota.

I hope Ferguson succeeds somewhere...he seems like a good player and tried to come back with the Pack, but just couldn't avoid injury. I agree with BigP, they need a QB to get the ball to any of the guys...

Cannot help it but everytime I read about a NFL team "needing a QB", I automatically think of Drew Bledsoe. Damn his blog (tonyhomo.com) was great sh*t!

Williamson's the joke. If Ferguson stays healthy, the top 3 Vikings receiver will be Bobby Wade, Sidney Rice and Robert Ferguson. In that order.

I honestly think that Ferguson was brought in with the thinking that he'd be a veteran presence to help mentor along their young WR corps, while not threatening to take away too many opportunities from them. They've got some decent young talent there, and I don't see this signing having a big impact on what they plan on doing. As far as Williamson is concerned, he has been dissapointing, but with his work with Nike this offseason, I think he'll make just enough deep catches to force opposing defenses to pay attention to him. And that's all Chilly wants out of his receivers- just enough plays to keep less than 9 guys in the box so AD can run.
