I think that espn the magazine explained perfectly what was wrong with the NBA in an artile 2 months ago, at least their explanation holds true for me. THey said that in your mind you picture the NBA as five guys working as one in a relatively free flowing unit. In reality there are a lot of players who are ballhogs and fouls often break the pace of the game which is something people forget about over the course of an offseason which makes people re-idealize basketball during the offseason. Thats not exactly what the magizine said but it was the basic idea.

I know just what the NBA is and I still enjoy it. Is it what it was when I was growing up through the 90s? No, but it isn't what Simmons grew up with in the 80s or what my Dad watched in the 70s. The game has changed, it's noticed more dramactiaclly because it is played 5 v 5 and within 23 feet of each Goal/Basket. But I think it's less the players and more of the rule changes that have been set up over time that contradict each other in purpose.

My stepdad complains about the NBA. If youre an older person, maybe you can't adjust to the way it is nowadays. I haven't heard any complaints from the people in my generation. Everybody I know loves it. People are just going to have to accept the fact that sports aren't ever going to be the way they were in their "older" days

Yeah. I love hockey the way it is now. Others loved it the way it was back in the day. There's always going to be different opinions from different generations. Maybe i'll be complaining when I get older about how sports aren't the same as they used to be

This is not an old school v new school thing at all. Look at America's performance at international tournaments! Team play kicks our asses, it has ZERO to do with the fact that our guys don't play together as a team for long enough. It's about them not playing as a team. The refs don't call fouls properly, and traveling has become a joke. The quality of basketball being played in America sucks.

Stay with me on this one Pip because I don't want to lose you, but; wouldn't playing together longer lead to higher team chemistry? This would in fact help them play a more well rounded team game yes? moving on...

It was simple when the American players possessed far superior skill and basketball IQ like we were in 92 or even in 96. We could see in '00 that the system was starting to break, although we were still so talented that the international game hadn't caught up to the USA. Now however with the extreme diversity of talent in the NBA from the across the globe, it's impractical to believe that you can assemble guys for 2 weeks and expect them to beat the best teams in the world.

The revamped USA Basketball program is showed us this summer that when we have a full complement of healthy players working together through a training camp they can dominate. As far as USA Basketball internationally we're on the right track and in fact needed those 3 down tournaments to get the system fixed.

As far as the NBA, it's a mixed bag of international players, swingmen and playmakers. The game is played by athletes far superior in their abilities then the players before then and the game that suits the current skill sets is pick and roll. The set allows for penetration and dish, penetrate and pop, or screen and go pass combos which benfit slahers and 3 point shooters. Once upon a time it was about motion, and just like that, the style of play will change over time with the players abilities.

The game caters to the players abilites, the players don't cater to the game and it's one of the rare sports where this happens. The Association bends and alters the rules to conform to the modern player, but doesn't delete old rules from the book allowing for contradiction and game interuption.

This is the game, it is how it always has been, although not in it's current form, it has always been built like this, if you like it good, if you don't that's cool too. What isn't cool is bitching about the league because if a fan really looks hard at the past, most of the things that have created the league we see today, we're asked for by the fans.

When a full roster of NBA All-stars lose to teams with 2-3 NBA All-stars there is an issue. It's not about chemistry, it's about the style of basketball they play. I did state that clearly too, maybe you should learn how to read better.

This team will do better because Coach K will coach team ball, and those who've signed on, have signed on to play team ball. He's been a hard-ass about commitment, but not because he's building chemistry! These guys have been watching each other play for years, they know their styles, this league has the fewest players active then any other american professional sports league. This isn't an insult, basketball just has the smallest roster size. These guys don't need to develop chemistry, they need to change their philosophy toward the game of basketball. That is what Coach K is doing, making them play a different style, that's what is taking so long! These guys have been doing their thing since they were kids, and now have to re-learn the entire game. There is a reason Duke players never make it big in the NBA, they play team ball, and that is not the game the NBA plays.

The national team doesn't need to be fixed, it's a representation of the game we play in America. The problem is the game we play in America.

The game has not evolved, Americans just aren't playing basketball anymore, call it something else and stop pretending. At some point American Football stopped being rugby, it became something else. Maybe this is what's happening. Maybe America has drifted so far off the basketball map that they are playing a different game altogether....this is not a bad thing and may help people like me enjoy the game more.

When a group of "All-Stars" that have played together a few times takes on a team that has played together throughout their whole lives (as most National teams have) and have timing, angles, familiarity and unspoken communication on their side - IT is a different game. A fist beats five separate thumbs every time.

Pip, I think you would be served well to learn more about how the game is played before you make assumptions about random talent beating refined skill.

P.S. - the U.S. team played horrible this summer, didn't they?

Carlos Boozer, Grant Hill, Elton Brand, Jay Williams (before the accident was balling) all these guys are NBA no-shows? Are you kidding me Pip, your just an ignorant high school kid running off at the mouth because you've watch the NBA since the lockout happened.

Heads up buddy, I've been studying the game like some kinda Lawrence Frank follower because I once upon a time had asperations of playing D1 College ball as a Point Gaurd. So when it comes to the NBA your in my arena, you can take your dreams of ball hogs and your ESPN2 street ball episodes to another person.

I'm not going to break down the NBA bit by bit to get into a pissing contest with someone who's clueless, so I'll leave this as it lays.

The problem with the NBA is people like you making general assumptions about things they don't care to understand properly or hold in realistic perspective.

I'm tired of people trashing things because they're stuck in the past.

Regurgitation of worn out cliches is more rampant than ever.

I like the NBA but I can't follow it because I don't have cable/satellite. If they put more games (like the playoffs) on national TV I'd follow it a lot more.

That is a great point, when NBA switched from NBC or ABC/ESPN they took quite a few games from the National Audience and put them on ESPN, that doesn't help.

Let it also be stated clearly that the International rules for play is a different set of rules than the NBA game. It's akin to comaring F1 racing and NASCAR.
