WHAT?! No fine for Travis Johnson?

by Behbigben15

On Sunday, the Dolphins starting QB, Trent Green, suffered another serious concussion after attempting to cut block the Houston Texans DT, Travis Johnson, during the Dolphins 22-19 loss at Houston on Sunday.  Green attempted a legal cut block on Johnson during an end-around, Green suffered his second serious concussion in 13 months after Green took a knee to the side of the head.  Green was flown back to Miami on the team plane, and it was announced that Green suffered a grade three concussion.  Green is seriously pondering retirement, now.  I think he probably should have retired after the concussion he suffered during week one of last year, but instead, Green was signed by Miami, and will most likely retire now.

That was only half the story.  Travis Johnson, the one that Green attempted a low block on, was flagged for taunting Green after the play.  After Johnson got up off the ground, he stood over top of the motionless Green, and pointed his finger at him, trying to act all tough.  I think that that is one of the most classless things a 30-year old professional football player can do (one of the many, anyway).  Getting hurt is part of the game, but so is blocking people like Green did, it was a legal block, and I think that Johnson should be fined for his actions, at least.  This is not all he did.  After the game, during a press conference, Johnson argued that Green hit him with a cheap shot, and Johnson was wining about it to the press.  I think Johnson is the wrong one here.  Even if it was a cheap shot (even though it clearly was NOT), he still shouldn't have taunted Green like that.  Green was severely injured, and had to be removed on a stretcher, that is one of the stupidest things I have seen since Jose Offerman attacked a pitcher with a bat in his hands a few months ago.

Here is what the NFL had to say about Johnson:

"Gene Washington [the NFL's director of football operations] determined that Johnson's taunting penalty did not warrant a fine," league spokesman Greg Aiello explained, according to the Houston Chronicle. "The player was upset about what he thought was an illegal block. Gene did not believe he deserved to be fined."

That is bullshit, Johnson does deserve a fine, or maybe more.  This injury looks like it will end Trent Green's career (although it would have been over soon anyway, but still).  If Terrell Owens, and Chad Johnson are going to get fined for TD celebrations, then I think Travis Johnson should get fined for taunting an injured player, that is just the NFL being very, very stupid.  The good news is that Johnson did apologize, but it may take a while for me to accept his apology (like let's see here, probably NEVER).  Anyone else think he should have been at least fined?

"If Terrell Owens, and Chad Johnson are going to get fined for TD celebrations, then I think Travis Johnson should get fined for taunting an injured player." You hit the nail right on the head here. If the NFL deems egotistical wideouts having fun detrimental to competition and the league, then malicious taunting of an unconscious player certainly fits that heading as well. But, the NFL doesn't make sense, so neither does this ruling. It'd be laughable if it weren't so pathetic.

That really pisses me off, they are going to sit their and let Johnson get away with something like that. The NFL really needs to fix that problem.

I think he should get fined for the taunt, but I can understand him taunting. Defensive linemen get 15 yard penalties and fines for hitting a QB below the waist, Green went down and hit Johnson at the knee (with his helmet) and no QB would ever get fined for doing that.

But, the block was legal, and hitting a QB below the waist is illegal. So, really Green didn't do anything wrong, but he did pay a big price.

Green is also smaller than Johnson, so he needs to use a cut block to stop him...

The block was legal, but I'm just saying I can understand Johnson's emotions in the ehat of the moment.

But its instinctive, not malicious. When Trent was down there, you could see him second guess himself and try to pull back, too late.

New picture game!

Which wide receiver will be the first to imitate Travis Johnson after scoring a TD?

A. Terrell Owens

B. Chad Johnson

And how could Roger Goodell fine either WR for doing exactly the same as Johnson?

Ahh the double standards in the NFL are rich!

Chad Johnson will imitate Travis Johnson. T.O. will imitate Trent Green when Rodney Harrison destroys him.

It's called professional respect... yes the hit Green did may have been 'legal' but no man should ever hit any man's knees with his helmet no matter what position was the hitter & hittie... that was Johnson's career Green was messing with... what would've happened him Johnson had his knees broken? He would be done with his career and Green would be the one who gets fined... while I don't condone either Green or Johnson's actions, I can certianly understand why Johnson 'taunted' - he was caught up in the moment and did not know the extent of Green's condition at the time and he did come out later and appologized for the taunt...

The hit was legal. There is no such thing as professional respect in the NFL. This "he was messing with his career" stuff is B.S. Every down risks the careers of these men. If they don't want the risk of injury they should have become accountants. The taunting really doesn't bother me much because it was the heat of the moment and Johnson didn't know he was injured. Personally I think it was more of a bruised ego that made him so mad. People always say "put a skirt on him" when we talk about not being able to hit the QB. Should we now say the same about linemen. Lets not ignore the fact that Johnson apologized, but could someone remind me, did he apologize before or after he said "F**k Trent Green"?

Hopefully if anything comes out of this situation it is that they will make those type of blocks in the open field illegal. As was said on earlier posts that could have been a career ending injury to Johnson, wouldn't you be pissed too.

If I had been blocked like that I would have been upset too, agreed, Johnson could have had major knee damage from that stupid block attempt by Green, legal or not it was a bad decision that could have cost Johnson's season or career. the thing that ppl got so upset about was that Johnson was pointing his finger at someone who was unconscious. if Green wasn't hurt on the play I don't think there would have been any kind of uproar, ppl feeling sorry for Trent b/c he got hurt but getting hurt has nothing to do with his ill advised block, 2 seperate things

BigBen you are completely wrong. Trent Green took a cheap shot at Travis Johnson, when you make those type of hits people get hurt, this time we are lucky that the person taking the cheap shot got hurt rather then the innocent person taking the cheap shot. You obviously don't know the history of Travis Johnson. He was a first round pick 2 years ago that has been hurt a lot. He was told that this year would be his last chance to prove that he can stay healthy and prove that he belongs in the NFL. He saw this hit as a potentially career ending hit. He could have seriously hurt his knees or neck. Even if it was only a season ending injury, then he would probably ended his career as a Texan. So he was obviously mad about it and he got up to yell at Trent Green for it, but he had no idea that Trent Green was out cold. And Falcon, yes Trent Green is smaller than him by about 100 lbs. But that doesnt mean that he should take a cheap shot. Either he should try and block him the right way, and most likely get run over, but at least slow him down or he can get out of the way. Your argument is like saying that if you or I were trying to cover Randy Moss then we should be able to knee him in the balls when we are jamming him at the line since we are at such an athletic disadvantage.

Wrong, wrong, wrong. That was not a cheap shot. It goes on every week in almost every game. RBs do it to linemen all the time when pass protecting. Johnson should perhaps keep his eyes open for potential blockers. Johnsons history is his problem and no one elses. IT WAS A LEGAL BLOCK. How many times does that have to be repeated. Your Moss analogy is, well, outrageous since kneeing people in the balls is illegal and Greens block was legal.

no steel town you are wrong. Where did i call that an illegal block? I didn't, I called it a cheap block. RBs doing it at the line is a lot different then doing it in the open field when players are running full speed. I may be wrong about the Moss analogy, but I don't know which rule that would be breaking.

THAT KIND OF BLOCK IS ILLEGAL IN EVERY ASPECT OF THE GAME EXCEPT ON OFFENSE INSIDE THE HASH MARKS. INTENDED ONLY FOR LINEMAN TO USE IT AGAINST THE DEFENSE. IT WAS ONLY TECHNICALLY A LEGAL BLOCK BECAUSE THE RULES ARE BS. IT IS ILLEGAL IN ALL OTHERS BECAUSE WHEN A PLAYER IS IN A ALL OUT SPRINT, THE LIKELIHOOD OF HIS CAREER GETTING ENDED IS GREATER. JOHNSON WAS IN AN ALL OUT SPRINT TO TRY AND MAKE A PLAY AND GREEN TOOK A CHEAP SHOT. HE GOT WHAT HE DESERVED. IT SERVES HIM RIGHT. IF SOMEONE WOULD HAVE HIT HIM THAT WAY, HE WOULD BE WHINING AND CRYIN TO THE LEAGUE ABOUT PROTECTING HIM.
