Vote for Murray Walker in the Hall of Fame!

by user Alex Holowczak

Murray Walker was a British Formula One commentator for over 50 years, and has been involved in the sport ever since the 1950s. Initially involved in advertising, he coined the Opal Fruits advertising slogan “Makes your mouth water”. But he was also a journalist and Formula One commentator.

His voice was synonymous with Formula One on British television, and most people watched the sport in Britain not for the race but to hear Walker commentate.

His style enthused people, he often sounded excited at the race as various things happened – his voice changed depending on the state of the race to engage the viewers. He had many catchphrases, and his cry of “Go! Go! Go!” at the start of each race lives long in the memory.

He famously made many errors whilst commentating, but this only added to the public support of Walker, he once said “Everyone makes mistakes, I just make more than others”. Even today in Australia, he made another mistake, confusing 1982 World Champion Keke Rosberg with his son Nico Rosberg (during the 2006 Australian Grand Prix).

His list of quotes and mistakes on here are very lengthy, as you can see here. Often his enthusiasm got the better of him, as his mouth worked before his brain. He often employed the kiss of death upon the race.

Some of Murray’s work

1969 Italian Grand Prix

Murray says “Jochen Rindt going through”, you then hear someone correcting him – it’s Beltoise infact. He called them across the line though.

Leaving a Motorcycle Race at the Start

Murray commentates on a Fight

As a side issue - Salazar was Chilean, not Colombian.

Kiss of death

“For spectacular driving watch this!”

Interviewing Bernie Ecclestone

Ecclestone, owner of BRABHAM. That’s BRABHAM…

1997 European Grand Prix

Mainly Murray Walker commentating.

Advertising

His famous advert with Damon Hill, who at the time had been 2nd in the World Championship twice in a row.

Collection

A collection of Murray Walker moments, all highly entertaining, the “F1 Marathon” particularly good. As was the Alesi problem…

So, I emplore you all! Go to the Murray Walker page and vote 5 stars for the best commentator there has ever been, better than John Madden (who you can also vote for), and arguably the best commentator the world has ever seen in any sport.

No. I don't think I've ever heard him called that before. Good to hear a US F1 fan though!

"Sadly, being an American fan, I never had the privilege of hearing Muzza" And therein lies the problem...

I.e. Americans don't get to hear him - so they just made up "Muzza".

That must be why British sites call him that...

What can I say other than - they're wrong. In 10 years of watching Formula One, nobody has ever called him "Muzza", at least no-one that would know.

I'd place him 5th.
  1. Al Micheals (greatest NFL broadcaster ever and caller of the miracle on Ice)
  2. Bob Costas (who cares what he's calling, if he's calling it it's good)
  3. Herb Carneal (famous twins radio broadcaster who is legendary in his ability)
  4. John Madden
  5. Murray Walker
