Born on March 5, 1897 in Ontario, Kansas, Virgil Barnes (Virgil Jennings Barnes) played for the New York Giants and Boston Braves over the course of his 9 year career. Barnes broke into the bigs on September 25, 1919 with the New York Giants, and put up a 3.48 ERA in 51.2 innings pitched in 1922, his rookie year.

Most people believe that Virgil Barnes's best season was 1924, when he posted a 3.06 ERA, won 16 games and struck out 59 batters.
