Born on August 13, 1930 in Leakesville, Mississippi, Vinegar Bend Mizell (Wilmer David Mizell) played for the St. Louis Cardinals, Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Mets over the course of his 9 year career. Mizell broke into the bigs on April 22, 1952 with the St. Louis Cardinals, and put up a 3.65 ERA in 190 innings pitched in 1952, his rookie year.

Most people believe that Vinegar Bend Mizell's best season was 1953, when he posted a 3.49 ERA, won 13 games and struck out 173 batters.
