Video Replays and Coach Challenges

How do video replays and coach challenges occur in the NFL? Is there a video referee and do the crowd get to see the replay? And what's with the box thing that the referee looks into?

No offense, but it would be a lot easier if you just looked up the NFL rule book to answer these type of questions. A challange can occur on most any play if a coach is willing to throw the challange flag. Inside of the two minute markers the coach cannot challange a play but the challanges come from a video referee in a booth. The box the ref looks into is just a camera that has access to every angle the NFL camera crews have. Its just a way for the ref can look at the play without the distractions from the outside world.

How does this comment get a minus? It is the absolute truth, no opinion or anything else just fact.

BP - the problem with your response is that not everyone has access to the NFL rulebook. I've looked for it online and there is not a full book on the 'net. What is on the 'net (NFL.com) is summary stuff and does not answer this question.

so do they show the replays on the big screen so the crowd can see?

also, why aren't coaches allowed to challenge a play in the final 2 minutes of each half?

This isn't allowed so that coaches can't use the challenge to stall for time. A replay takes much long than a regular time-out, so that would give them a lot more time to set-up plays. Replays exist, but they are initiated by a central booth.

final two minutes are subject to review by the booth officials, they will review anything that appears controversial. this actually, should be the way it is handled for the full game, as with NCAA.

yeah, the stadium has its own cameras and angles, and what is shown on the big screen is up to that stadiums producers and video directors. It has nothing to do with the refs, or the NFL

Actually, many close calls are not shown on the replay screens for fear of riling up a crowd, throwing them into a frenzy. At Ohio State, they almost never show close replays, and much the same at Heinz field. There is a line that stadia personnel somehow draw.

At Gilette they almost always show replays of close calls, regardless of the situation. I say "almost" because while I've been to a *lot* of games there, I haven't been to all of them, but I can't recall them not showing a replay on the big screen. It probably depends on what the team knows about their fan's behavior historically, and whether there have been any recent incidents.

I hate to say it but I actually agree with pnatt. The booth thing looks so seventies-ish. You'd think the NFL could fork over some $ for some fancier looking technology.

The black box thing looks nuts. Surely the ref can manage distractions from the outside world without the box thing.

Can the video referee in the booth challenge a play outside the two-minute warning?
