Video Gaming an Olympic Sport??

11
Vote

I love the Olympics. I love the spirit and pride that comes with international competition in such a wide range of sports. When I think of Olympic sports, track and field, swimming, skiing, and skating come to mind. Video games do not.

Ted Owen, head of the Global Gaming League, wants to see that changed. He’s pushing a campaign to get video games introduced as a demonstration during the 2008 Olympics. He's so serious about the idea that he has entered into talks with the Chinese government about having video games included during the Beijing Olympics.

Owen told CNN, " People aren't watching [the Olympics] as much anymore. You need to bring younger viewers back if you want to keep making money. To do that, you need to embrace non-traditional sports. They did it with snowboarding - and look how the popularity of that has surged in the Games. Video games deserve to be seen as a non-traditional sport...They would bring something to the Games that [that age group] engages in and everyone understands."

The idea sounds a little crazy, especially since baseball and fastpitch softball will get the Olympic boot after 2008. A few questions came to mind:

  • Would video gaming compromise the integrity of the Games more than baseball and fastpitch softball?
  • Does anyone else have a problem with new events being considered based on how much revenue they could pull in as opposed to it's accordance with the Olympic's mission of sporting competition?
  • Could video gaming potentially be considered sporting competition?

If video gaming became an olympic sport and rugby rather it be 7's or 15's continues to be excluded it would be a shame, and I would never respect the integrity of the Olympic games again.

Well said. Besides, do you know how many millions of people think they are the best at Madden?

Yes, but there's only one who's really the best. You can call him Robert James...

I hate to say it but, with the younger generation, those in elemnentary school, video game playing is more popular than actual atheletic sports. I do believe that Video Games will be the next event discussed in the Sport or No Sport series.

Ill give it video games sport status just because the scale for sport non sport is so low. That being said, it still should not be an Olympic event, or even taken seriously

If they take video games to the Olympics, then the opposite events should be included as well (having a life, getting laid, contributing to society)

Something tells me there's a kid in Tanzania (or the like) that would be the "sport's" Michael Jordan if only he could afford a PS3... and a television, and electricity... or clean drinking water...

Rugby 15s will never be in it. You can't get a tournament in in two weeks. However, 7s is a possibility. Video Games will not be in the Olympics in 2008. Mainly, because unlike Ted Owen, the International Olympic Comittee actually has a brain or two working there.

7's can easily be played in a tourney style over the 2 week period that is the olympics. 15's really could be too. WE have massive 40 team tourneys here in the states and they take place over a weekend just shorten the games to 40s

It would be easier as Sevens, since it already exists in the Commonwealth Games. Argentina, USA, Italy etc. could complete the Olympic movement (none are in the Commonwealth). It could work on 2 days let alone 2 weeks. With a Rugby (15s) World Cup, nobody would play in the Olympics. It would hold no value. Sevens would though.

I do agree with you on that Alex sadly Olymic 15's rugby would be like Olympic soccer an after thought to the world cup

The most obvious reason it will not make it is the Olympic's motto - "Citius, Altius, Fortius", a Latin phrase meaning "Swifter, Higher, Stronger". None of which applies to video gaming.

Baseball and Softball are getting thrown out because they need to be played by a certain number of people, in a certain number of countries in a certain number of continents. Baseball and Softball no longer meet these criteria.

If video gaming gets in, could no-limit Texas hold'em poker be far behind?
