Vick's Punishment?

9
Vote

by Dwalbert

I'm wondering what the general consensus is throughout this website as to what we all believe Michael Vick's punishment should be concerning the allegations against him if they do turn out to be true.

I'm slightly biased in this argument being the owner of two pitbulls. Having to go through all of the nonsense of the misconceptions about pitbulls everytime I take the dogs (one is afraid of cats, the other is scared to death of my bedroom door and the ironing board) to the dog park or even on walks and then with the PETA indictment of the dogs; so I am hesitant to judge Michael Vick yet just because I know and love this breed so much.

Just throwing it out there to everyone else.

My initial thoughts on this are that he might not even be suspended just because of the "real life" punishments that he will receive. If this whole thing hadnt gone over state lines it might not be as serious but he might be looking at serious jail time. I dont know if the commish will suspend him for as long or if at all because he will have already served time in prison (ala tank johnson). Beats me though. We'll see what happens.

I think because of the precedent set with Pacman and Tank and the other guys that have been slapped hard for their off the field issues, he has to get at least 4 games. that's a prediction. I mean Pacman wasn't even charged. As far as what he "should" get....I say if he's charged for being an unknowing host, give him 6 games because that is a lame-a** excuse. If he is charged with allegations that he was heavily involved, the NFL needs to investigate on its own. If there is evidence showing real involvement, he should be done for the year. And if it shows he is a real player in that underground culture and this is more than a one time thing, he should get the lifetime ban. It is just inexcuseable behavior that has no place in society.

Yeah, but Jones and Chris Henry were repeat offenders who just don't get the point. Vick has had other things, but nothing as serious as this. I agree that it could be around 4 games or anything like that. I guess we'll see what happens...

Four games seems like standard procedure at this point; because he's not a "repeat offender" (I don't think?) he won't get more than that, unless he's convicted. That could get very interesting.

Whatever the law calls for, then, if Pacman gets a year with no convictions, then Vick should be banned from the NFL, period. Seems like there's a huge crowd jumping on the Vick-is-guilty-in-spite-of-no-trial bandwagon.

Make Vick and the other suspended players play a year for Matt Millen's Detroit Lions.

Just throw milk bones at him in every game he plays in, for the remainder of his career. Also, have him give away free Atlanta Falcons with the number 7 and "Ron Mexico" on the back.

Someone needs to check with our new admin to see if the Toronto Argonauts are dialing Ron Mexico's cell phone as we type...

it makes me proud to know that a discussion thread that I wrote on my first day brought up the argonauts.

As a dog owner, aren't you horrified at the allegations? This has nothing to do with the breed of dogs at BadNewz Kennels. It has everything to do with how those dogs were treated.

Some of the stories I have read that are supposedluy taken from the indictment. 1. One of the dogs to 40 minutes to die from blood loss during a fight. 2. If the dogs were deemed not fit for further fighting, they were killed. I said killed, not put death. Methods such as hanging and banging the dog on the ground are very violent methods. In another case, a dog was wet down and electrocuted. 3. Dogs were starved and chained so they could almost, but not quite reach each other. Both of those actions are meant to make the dogs more violent.

This is a federal indictment guys. From what I understand, the feds don't screw around. For them to bring an indictment this fast means they must have some pretty incriminating evidence. I have seen numbers on the internet (for what it's worth) showing the federal success rate exceeding 95% and to keep that rate, they have no problem being deliberate. Here we have an example where no deliberation was needed. Note that they have four different witnesses.

My take on the Vick punishment: The NFL will suspend him for one year. After the trial he will go to prison for at least 4 years. His days in the NFL are over.

Of course, I could be completely wrong. They feds may let him plead out. . .

but it's not likely, IMHO.

Actually...well:

If Vick leads to bigger fish, like some sort of grand ringleader (or whatever it is in dogfighting, i have no idea)...then he may get the opportunity...but for the feds to not prosecute him in a public manor (that is to say, give him time), will show some bad faith...

However, the details I've seen lead me to believe he was running a "ring" or was at least a large partner in the "business"...and he's famous

I've got this at the other Vick thread as well.

Ok, I quickly skimmed the indictment (posted at the smoking gun). Here is a summary of the witnesses:

1 Sold Vick 4 dogs in 2002

2 Saw Vick at a dogfight in Blackstone, VA. His dog fought Vick’s dog. His dog won and Vick himself handed him the purse.

3 Was at a dog fight at Vick’s place in VA. Was criticized for yelling Vick’s name at the event.

4 Was at a dog fight at Vick’s place in VA. His dog fought Vick’s dog and won. Vick himself handed him the purse.

There are a lot of details in the indictment.
