Veterans Seek New Opportunities with the Coyotes

Goaltender David Aebischer and forward Mike York look to revive their careers by being part of the rebuilding program for the Phoenix Coyotes. Both players were not happy with their performances of prior seasons and look forward to reclaim the form that they have lost along the way.

The good news is that for both players, the expectations are not that high in a hockey market that will not garner much national attention. The Coyotes play on Versus only once next year, and with the mission of the rebuilding program that the team is undertaking, they have that chance to just play hockey and not worry about anything else.

David Aebischer was the heir apparent to Colorado Avalanche superstar Patrick Roy. During the 2003-2004 season, he played 62 games and had a .924 save percentage and a 2.43 goals against average while winning 32 games. After the lockout, however, his stats and performance steadily declined and when he was traded to the Montreal Canadiens in 2006, he had his worst year as a NHL goalie.

Since entering the league during the 1999-2000 campaign, Mike York has been a solid player. From the year he debuted with the N.Y. Rangers to the 2005-2006 season, he played in 449 games and scored 287 points with 111 goals and 176 assists. Last year was his performance dropped off remarkably, and was traded from the N.Y. Islanders to the Philadelphia Flyers.

Both Aebischer and York look to redeem themselves in the Valley next season, and with the Coyotes focus on growing their franchise, they have an excellent opportunity to do so. I would think though that this year is their last shot to reclaim what they have lost.

Aebischer was great when he had Foote, Blake and Morris in front of him, look what happened to him when they all moved on. He really wasn't that good, in my opinion. He's not even Swiss Number 1 anymore (Martin Gerber has taken that role).

Aebischer was never great. His entire career he was a dissapointment. I am still pulling for LaNevue to win the starting job. York can be a pretty decent player. I imagine he will put up some points for the 'Yotes.

As much of a disappointment as your spelling of disappointment, MJD? :)

"He" is used for the sake of a pronoun. It equally applies to she.

These two are vets, so hopefully, they will bring leadership to the club. Surely, this is not because of their play that they were signed. Both of these players are on the downside of their careers.

Aebischer definitely is on the downside of his career, as he played just 32 games last season in Montreal. The scouting report on him is that he needs to show more consistency to regain a starting gig in the NHL. He is very reluctant to be a backup, which is probably why he jumped on this gig, and he has to hope he will outplay David LeNeveu or fade into obscurity. York has never scored more than 26 goals in a season, and a 10 goal, 11 assist, -18 performance didn't impress most teams, hence why York got a 1 year, 1 million dollar contract. His goal production has dropped from 22 to 16 to 13 to 10 in the last four seasons.

Very true that Aebischer will have to fight for the top position with the other goaltenders, LeNeveu included. LeNeveu hasn't really performed well yet. From the one interview that I saw last season, he desperately wants to come back up to the NHL club and losing his spot to Mike Morrison (who played in the ECHL last season) definitely stung him. It should be interesting.
