Born on August 17, 1920 in Hellier, Kentucky, Vern Bickford (Vernon Edgell Bickford) played for the Boston Braves, Milwaukee Braves and Baltimore Orioles over the course of his 7 year career. Bickford broke into the bigs on April 24, 1948 with the Boston Braves, and put up a 3.27 ERA in 146 innings pitched in 1948, his rookie year.

Most people believe that Vern Bickford's best season was 1950, when he posted a 3.47 ERA, won 19 games and struck out 126 batters.
